- Geographic information + the results of all soil tests. As a
resident of the Centretown, locating space for community gardening is
a challenge. Given the use of leaded fuel + paint in years past,
accessibility to soil results can facilitate the identification of
community garden, and general beautification initiatives.

- Public library - an ingenius programmer in Victoria mashed public
library data with Amazon.com to inform the user if the book of
interest is available through the public library

- Laslty, and pardon my potential ignorance as I have not looked into
this application in any great depth, but the Child care app. from
Toronto appears to be quite useful / helpful.

Library doesn't really involve the city, it involves the application
talking to the library's catalogue system.

You can try out some of the tools on the Library Labs page, including
a LibraryLookup bookmarklet

http://www.biblioottawalibrary.ca/lab/index_e.html

They don't seem to be maintaining the page any more though - what is
needed is a way to connect some more coders (in library terms
"superpatrons") with the library internal staff in order to update and
maintain the tools they've already put on their lab. I tried
contacting them because their LibX is out of date, but I didn't get a
response.

The Library Labs link is now 404, with the recent redesign of the OPL
site.
If anyone has more info on getting open data from the library, please
let me know. I've done some screen-scraping on it before, but of
course that's now broken with the new design.

Hi Nick,

You're right; could you update the wiki with that info?

Looks like the location data is right at the top of the source for http://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/main/library/location

Hi Edward,

I've updated the wiki, and added an entry for general library info.  One thing I'd like to have is a feed and/or iCal for one's currently checked out library books, possibly over multiple accounts.  Scenario: my wife tracks when books are due for all 4 accounts in our family.  I previously wrote a Ruby script to do this via screen scraping, but that's broken now with the library site redesign.  I don't see any info about API or other public data feeds from the library.  Is this kind of screen scraping allowed for ODO, e.g. if I were to make it a service.  Not sure how I'd handle securely managing credentials (I'd rather not store them, just pass them through), so if you have any thoughts, I'm all ears.

Regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

In the last few days I've read and heard a few people ask about
scraping sites. Perhaps we should instead be asking the city for data
in easy to use formats. It takes 2 minutes to ask the web master for a
data feed. The library has a website feedback form here:
http://bibliottawalibrary.ca/forms/feedback_e.html I plan on asking
to get the feed of library locations/hours back and I encourage others
to ask for it as well.

Attached is a copy of the library location/hours feed from a few days
before they changed their site.

Hey all:

Here is a random list of some of public administrative data that could/should be public in accessible and reusable formats -
This is not a complete list, but one I compiled just by looking at the city's website.

Great list Tracey.

Another great resource of info is from the Ottawa Police. Currently
they are providing this to CrimeReports.com as you can see here:
Link: http://www.crimereports.com/map?search=Ottawa+Ontario

However no one is able to download the data from Crime Reports without
violating their terms.

This would be great data for either an alert system for neighbours to
signup for or for potential home buyers etc to know exactly what's
going on in any prospective neighbourhoods.

Also the Police create Crime Statistic pdfs which are great and useful
but again not that easy to use in a opendata format for other uses or
mashups.
Link:http://ottawapolice.ca/en/CrimeFiles/CrimeMaps_Reports/
crimestats.aspx

I would encourage this data to be opened up to the public as we as the
taxpayers pay for the Police service and are entitled to be able to
slice and dice the data they collect. Considering they are creating a
CrimeReports map and pdfs, this shouldn't be very difficult.

Just my 2 cents.

Nice work Tracy; looks like we've got a few more datasets to add to
the list on the wiki.

Delan: where can I find the terms of use for the Ottawa police? They
seem to be encouraging the use of the data with the list view of the
data (see the URL in the open data Ottawa wiki page for datasets).

Ugh. The downsides to responding to email on the phone.

The wiki page I'm talking about is this one: http://opendataottawa.pbworks.com/Requested-Datasets

Here you can find some info on downloading the data.

http://www.crimereports.com/faq/downloadData

They only say commercial benefit is prohibited.

I'd really like to see an RSS feed for the "City Council & Committee
Agendas & Minutes" page (http://www.ottawa.ca/cgi-bin/docs.pl?
lang=en). It would be a good first step in making that information
more machine-readable.

Of course, the ultimate goal would be to have those records in some
sort of structured data format like XML but I'm not holding my breathe
for that.

Shawn;

There are two models that exist that would be awesome a system like how'd they vote (http://howdtheyvote.ca/about.php) and Our Parliament is another tool in progress.  Such tools for the city would be great!

The make that information very accessible and the presentation makes it personable.

Thanks Tracey,

I'd definitely like to see something like How'd They Vote at the provincial an municipal level. It would really help the app that I'm building for the hackfest.

Do you have a link for Our Parliament?

Hey Shawn;

Our Parliament was released as a small beta +/- 2 years ago.  It was very beautifully then.  The author, designer & programmer have since received some grant funding and expect to release a new version end or March and beginning of April of this year.  It also looks like they might come and showcase their work at the Hackfest in Ottawa, which would awesome.  So stay tuned!

I know the designer and programmer, they are both exceptional and I am sure it will be a tool that can be re-purposed in many contexts.

Cheers

Sweet. Thanks Delan; I'll take a look and see if we can't expand that license to something more along the lines of the open data licenses the other cities in Canada are using.

Ah, it looks like this TOU is actually from the CrimeReports providers, and not the police dept. itself. Maybe we can get the data being sent to CrimeReports instead.
