That fame, and $3.50, together might get me a cup of coffee... ;-)

I have a friend who lives on Rice St in Cambridge
and owns a unit. He needs a contractor to work
on porch issues, some electric, and other small
scope items.
Would you make a recommendation of a name or
two that I may pass on to him. Otherwise it's
off to the yellow book for him.
Regards,

Subject: DBUG> Re: maximizing the DataCAD commons.
Evan Shu wrote, "we are encouraged
by the sense of community that remains strong among DataCAD folk.
Hang in
there, we see light at the end of the tunnel and better days ahead."
I think Evan has touched lightly on a very important idea we ought to
reflect on. In the last thirty years we have not needed to be
particularly
clever to succeed, that is particularly true in the west. We were
awash
in borrowed money to fertilize growth, and opportunity sprang up in
front
of us like grass. Suddenly we find ourselves living in a cashflow
environment. If your cashflow is net positive and you maintain cash
reserves that meet your needs, you survive, if not, you very rapidly
start
to die.
The early Christians have a lot to teach all of us about survival,
prosperity and competition. Before the year three hundred, generosity
of a
seemingly reckless magnitude distinguished the early Christians from
much
of the larger society around them and certainly from the Romans. Their
unfettered sharing resulted in surprising levels of Christian
prosperity in
spite of their generosity. Their remarkable success threatened the
popular
devotion of the masses to the more selfish social orders around
them. The
more of their wealth they poured freely into their Christian commons,
the
more all of them shared and could leverage their personal success,
creating
more wealth and a greater wellspring of resources in their commons.
The
power of this sharing triumphed over all competition, eventually
forcing
the Roman empire to embrace their religion, if not their generosity.
DataCAD, Cheap Tricks, the Forums and their Classifieds have been our
Architectural community's commons for a long long time, and I suggest,
that
in our debt fueled hyper-prosperous past, it was well used, but never
approached being maximized. The more value we put into our commons,
the
more we will all prosper from sharing. The smart best path to a more
prosperous 2010, is for each of us to begin by giving away more of the
value possessed by each of us, to all of us. What you can freely use,
you
don't have to spend money to create. The more we share, the lower all
of
our costs get. The lower our costs get, the more productive we
become. The
more productive we become, the more competitive we are, and the better
value we offer to our clients.
This strategy works just like linux. We all share a somewhat
exclusive
language that focuses the value of anything we share. That common
language
enables us to share not just knowledge, but labor with great
efficiency, to
flatten the peaks and valleys of our office manpower curves.
Smoothing
your recruiting, hiring and firing by inviting more collaboration
between
us by internet, will expand and globalize all of our individual
knowledge
bases, and simultaneously raise levels of innovation in our practice
and
lower overhead. For the radical libertarians out there, labor swaps
could
disappear costs and incomes lowering taxes, at least while you get
away
with it.

You make really good points that our "community" may sometimes taken
for
granted.
It's must be something in the water , or perhaps it's Build Boston
around
the corner....but I too have been reflecting on the DBUG group and
Datacad
in general.
I feel privileged to still communicate with folks I met decades ago
and if
it was not for a trip to France to personally meet another DBUG
member, I
would not have met my wife.
Datacad has always allowed me to feed my kids when they were babies
and the
economy was in other slumps. There has always been a full box of
tools
and open stable of unselfish experts to give me an "edge" when it's
needed,
to get the job....and then get it done.
Recently the Datacad/DBUG group has come to the rescue when times have
been
rougher than any I can recall in almost 40 years. These folks have
seen
me up and seen me face down and never judged, just encouraged. For
these
"connections" I am truly grateful.
I was reading this weekend about another State (TX) that has mandated
BIM
for all State projects. When I was in Portland,OR last year trying to
make
things happen - The BIM flag was waving like crazy. Those same firms
are
now sitting with empty stations and dormant software and barely
enough work
to make overhead, in most cases. I can only imagine what their
"corporate IT
philosophy" is now. I am heading out your way to Seattle next month
to
try the same thing all over again, we'll just have to see what shakes
loose.
You are right George, to weather this current (economic) storm we need
to
dig within our ranks as well as digging within ourselves for
solutions.
We're in good hands on all fronts.
Thanks again for the post.

by Mark Madura, DATACAD
Having more downtime is giving many of you the opportunity to explore
DataCAD's modeling and rendering capabilities. We'll take a few pages

will facilitate the creation of 2D elevations from models. During
this
presentation, we'll show you how X3 will help you get down to details
via
3D.
