I found a link that has a pretty decent review of these services. Collaboration seems to be available with programs that include dropbox as  part of their program. That would be a real nice feature as would BIM if it actually worked properly as of today. It seems to be getting there though. Collaboration tools for people all over the world to use would be good to include so that you are not stuck to a specific geographic region to get results.

Currently I think David that as good and useful as Dropbox is, it can’t provide working synchronicity. The application would have to save or load in updated component files or whole files every time there was any change. Some applications seem to componentise elements to a great extent but whether that would be enough for seamless operation this way I don’t know (and currently doubt).

Another way would be to load command for command to Dropbox so that the like applications at each site act upon each command. I suspect that would be very slow. Dropbox is quick but not instantaneous. At each desktop it would be much faster where the application sits on a server and distributes its interface but Dropbox is not the place for that currently.

Applications like QuickTimer (An excellent and cheap Quickbooks Pro timing tool for iPhone etc.) have built in uploading / loading  via DropBox capacity. In fact this is by far the most streamlined way of operating it. Just the same, you need to stop and upload or load specifically. A change in one site is only reflected in another after a decision is made to reflect it.

I have a good deal of experience with collaboration via the cloud and use a number of avenues to do it depending on complexity of the project and numbers of people involved. I use Google Docs, Drop Box, Evernote, Basecamp, Nozbe (task manager with linkage capabilities to Drop Box and Evernote), and I am about to experience Podio via. a collaboration need with fellow board members of my local CSA. All these solutions are good at some things, not at others. I have generally chosen them because they are simple to use and clients can learn to use them easily, even those that are not particularly tech savvy.

Long ago I experimented with project management services that were more complex and featured, you could lock documents while editing for example, which is probably important for cad files, but found them too complex for me and others to be worth the added functionality.

I have found there is no substitute for fastidiousness in appropriately renaming and saving versions of files as they move through the development process. There needs to be very clear policy on that. And fastidiousness in organization of the production workflow as well.

For what its worth.
