Hello Paul

Not directly but on past performance. We have had an Epson Expression 1640XL
for more than a decade. That is a flat bed graphic scanner though we have
added a top automatic feeder. I am pretty sure they are no longer made but a
similar looking machine with something similar specifications which they do
make is called the 10000XL. I think there was or is a 12000XL and one other
which did not quite come up to those specifications.

The reason for noting this is that the 1640XL has done an amazing job and I
expect it will for another decade. It is robust, not quick by page scanner
comparison but as a graphic scanner it makes quick work of very high
resolution scans. It picks up very subtle colour variation and produces
terrific facsimile documents. Colour rendition is fantastic. The software is
as easy to use as you want or about as configurable as you could also want.
As we have a fast page scanner we almost never use the top feeder but it
works OK. As with the lid you can either lift up to thick book size or lift
off the feeder on these. They come with a variety of screens for aligning
and checking graphics. The feeder is an addition but you can also get film
and network additions. The platen is flush with the top surface so that
overhangs are not damaging to the document or scan. 19520x27520 pixels @
1600dpi 100% the 1640XL the 10000 may be better. The 10000XL has a slightly
better optical density and a good one comparative to others it also has
better optical resolution though I have been very pleased with and seldom
use the 1600x3200 on ours. A very pleasing thing was that even as old as it
was, when we moved to Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, it worked seamlessly (I cannot
say the same for the much younger Fujitsu page scanner.) The 1640XL has USB
2.0, SCSI and Firewire connections, I believe the 10000XL has dropped SCSI.

On the strength of past performance then, if our Epson Graphic scanner died
tomorrow (and if there was enough loot in the depleted treasure chest) I
would go straight out and buy their latest version. Though I would
investigate the cost of sending from the US to Australia as you fellas can
buy them for about $2500 US there and we would pay approximately $6500 US
here ($6,265 AU.) Figure that.

For me that type of money puts it into the 'major' expense category. I am
seldom 'happy' when having to come up with 'major' expenses but have been
very happy to have spent it on this unit. A decade + of hassle free terrific
operation.

Ian

PS one of the few other 'major' expenses I can say the same about was a
Cannon Facsimile machine bought in or about 1988 for a then whopping $5000
or thereabouts. It worked flawlessly for more than 2 decades when I decided
to pull the pin on faxes forever, with apart from plain paper, its memory,
A3 size, speed, automated sending and everything were all the works you
would expect in one built 2 decades later.
