Better Google Maps Experience
Usually the #1 reason people map is because they care very much about
how their neighborhood appears on Google Maps for millions to see and
use every day. Better maps means we can make the Google Maps products
work better for you in your hometown. For instance, we were able to
run StreetView in Romania because we had good streets drawn by the
community there first. The Pakistani mappers started mapping to make
Google Maps for Mobile work in Pakistan. All of Google's Geo products
are enhanced and work better for you when your hometown is better
mapped.
NB: Bringing street view to Botswana
Civic Pride
People are very proud of where they're from and like letting the world
know that their hometown is important. Better maps improves your
neighborhood by increasing tourism, ability for urban planning,
ability for disaster preparedness, and more. Mapping with Map Maker
puts your town "on the map" for the whole world to see.
Fun Community
And lastly, there's the community aspect: you guys! :) We've got a
great community of mappers that make it fun to map. You quickly become
recognized among a circle of people, as well as within your own
hometown, and experienced mappers are on-hand to help mentor new
folks. There's also often a sense of healthy competition that your
town is mapped better than someone else's or that you have more edits
than someone else. You're never alone: we're mapping the world
together!
What are your favorite reasons to map your neighborhood?
Maps API
In addition to the Listed. There is an element of Integration
The maps API is being used by many people on their websites. Where is
the location ? Distance from the Town Centre ? State of the Road ?
Distance from nearest Police station and supermarkets.
This is why I still Map and use Google Map Maker. The benefits are
still immense
Stories from Africa mappers
“Mapping for me is mostly about civic pride, but this is not only in
my hometown but also anywhere that i visit.Currently am in Namibia and
they really have well mapped roads but the places are not mapped as
such.So while i discover new places i put them on the map and also try
to influence others on mapping so that they can map their country. This
puts places on the maps and will be beneficial to someone, someday. The
best part is the fun that comes with mapping :).” Faith , Kenya
“I think that here is a huge demand in localisation and "putting
Rwanda on the map", literally said.
For the past years, Rwanda was synonym to Genocide, massacre,
instability, killings, etc.
By mapping and engaging other mappers, we are showing that though all
that happened, the people of Rwanda is resiliently rebuilding the
country. Thus a new road, a new building, a new school or health
facility on the map is a testimony to this rebirth of the nation.
Civic pride is my primary reason to map but of course seeing the
trends in e-business, I think that these maps that we slowly build
will be a great input to this vibrant sector.” Gilbert , Rwanda
“My main reason for mapping is to provide data for Map APIs.
Information on Google maps is up to date considering the collaborative
efforts from citizen cartographers. This enables community based
planning and design hence eliminating some of the problems that we do
face as a community.Apart from map APIs mapping is my hobby.” Ken ,
