Few things will bring a tear to my eye faster than hearing stories of
patriotic heroes. I love hearing about soldiers who gave their lives
for their teammates. I get engrossed with the drama of reading about
the risks taken by the Founding Fathers. I still get choked up hearing
the national anthem and knowing the story behind it.

As a Christian, I love reading about how these heroes spent so much
time on their knees in prayer. These men followed Jesus passionately
and it was their beliefs that led them to the ideas of liberty and
freedom. God was very much a part of the lives of the men who founded
this country. My heart swells thinking about how they followed God as
they led the new country. Not so much today.

I read this Psalm and hear both something that reflects what we know
about our history as well as a warning for our future:

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for
his inheritance." Psalm 33:12

It seems obvious to me, by reading history, that this country has been
blessed. We have been given great gifts and great responsibility.
Despite the lurches back and forth and the mistakes made along the
way, God has blessed this country to be the instrument of delivering
freedom to other parts of the world.

It also seems clear to me, by reading about current events, that we
run the risk of losing that blessing. Some might argue that we already
have. There is a strong drive to take this country in a direction
where we are the god or the government is the god. Either we feel we
can do it alone or we want a government that provides all you need and
will lead you where you need to go. When the god we follow is of our
own construction, nothing good will result.

The solution starts small. Is God your LORD? Then tell other people
about making God their LORD. Then we will become, again, a nation
whose God is the LORD.
