?But I can't use the ding classes to do this since they have limited visibility outside ding. what is the recommended way to do this

Right.  You'll have to wait until the beta is released.  I'm working hard on the custom graphics API and I should have it ready by then -- in fact, it's the only major feature that's on the "showstopper" list for the beta.
