It's on. One of the first 3 Saturdays in December. I'm going.

http://chris-pondero.blogspot.com/2009/11/first-annual-fall-forty-mile-country.html

Anyone else interested? If so, let me know which date is best, and
I'll get this thing scheduled.

Who else is in?

December 5, 12, or 19.  The 5th or 19th work best for me, but if the 12th is best for more folks, I'll adjust.

Chandra, I'm about 10 minutes west/northwest of Sanger on FM 2450, and about 1 hour from downtown Fort Worth.  The ride will leave from my house.

I found a couple of possible lunch spots in Muenster.  Neither are advertised as vegetarian spots, but one (at least) has a variety, including soups/salads, side veggies, etc.

If we get a cold front blowing in, it'll get...um...interesting.

Maybe a few of us could carpool to the start. I've got a beat up old
SUV with a 4 bike rack. If anybody wants to chip in for gas I can take
you. My truck drinks gas like crazy.

No train to Sanger.  Actually there is a train, but the only passengers are hobos.

This ride also includes no T-shirts, no well-stocked rest stops, no sag vehicles, and no goodie bags.

It does include a general store in a tiny town called Rosston near the mid-way point, and fellow riders who come well-prepared to make rough stuff ride somewhat more civilized.

you up to Sanger. That's too far to ride.

No.  We are not settled on the 12th.

I plan to watch posts here and on my blog for a few days (plus my own constraints), and then make a final decision.

I wonder if when Chandra said he could make it on the 12th if that implied that he could NOT make it on the 5th or 19th???

Date Established - Saturday, December 19

I have decided to attempt the route on Saturday, December 19th.  There is a possibility that I will decide that the weather is sufficiently horrible for me to abandon the endeavor, sit by a fireplace, and sip coffee.  That said, temps in the 40s, wind less than 20mph, and drizzle is probably a "go".  Anything worse might NOT be a "go".

You are welcome to join me, but understand this is not an organized ride and it is not supported.  Depending on the number of people to come along, we might find it advantageous to collaborate on the return trip logistics.  You are welcome to park at my house.  I will send directions to those who indicate that they plan to do the ride.  As of today, I believe I have at least ONE (possibly two) spot open in my return vehicle.

Questions?

Jim,

As of today, the route is a pen scribble on a Google maps multi-page printout, and it has been driven by auto.  My plan is to post it on Bikely, but I haven't yet had time to sit down and do it.

I could scan and email if you or someone needs it sometime soon.

I'm getting a little concerned. Today I rode around 12-15 miles and I
was worn out when I got home. 40 miles is going to be rough. I may
have to supply my own SAG crew. Maybe it was just the cold air
throwing me off.

Don't sweat it. Once you get going on a group ride, you draw energy
from the group. Plus I don't think this is the kind of crowd that
would drop one of their own.

Hey, it's blustery out there today. If we have this kind of wind,
we'll all be taking it easy.

That said, todays wind would be an awesome tailwind for our route.

Since this is a friendly group I'm not worried about being dropped, just holding everybody up. I'll be doing lots of snacking along the route to keep from bonking.

I'll keep it in mind. I was passed once last year by someone on an electric bike while climbing a hill. I caught back up on the flat. Buddy's a faster bike than I was then riding. How mud resistant is the electrical system?

I was gifted an old ('99) Fuji Aloha 1.0 last year. After quite a bit
of work, (it was used, abused, and put away wet, quite literally) I
rode it in two Tour de Cures and completed my first Hotter 'n Hell in
August. I dig the Fuji's! The new ones are out of my range, as are
most new bikes. I had never heard of Fuji before receiving this bike,
but they make pretty decent rides.

Hope you guys have fun! An unfortunate incident at a bounce house is
keeping me off the bike until Feb.

Chandra, thank you! I've been around since the day after this place
was created. I typically don't have the time (or any good input) to
write as much as the rest of you. However I read the daily emails and
felt I had something to contribute in regards to the Fuji. The one I
was gifted had seen many moons and rain storms. But she cleaned up
well and is a blast to ride. I'll only wipe the bike(s) down if it has
been a long, rainy ride (Tour de Cure this year, 65? miles in a good
rain, all day. The day following the bike was rubbed and lubed) or
unusually dirty (as in when I get cut off and go offroading or a road
is suddenly under construction). Otherwise as long as everything is
working well, just a chain lube every other week.

It is quite anticlimatic but here goes:The bounce hosue

The family was at a two year old's birthday party at a place called
"Pump it Up". It is essentially a warehouse filled with large bounce
houses. They had a mini-basketball court with 5' baskets so kids can
dunk, a super-happy-fun-slide (it was 20' tall), etc. They also had a
long inflatable "obstacle course". Rose and I had been on it a couple
of times before the mishap. There is a 10' climbing wall with blocks
to stand and rope handles to grab. We were near the top, I placed Rose
up there like I had before and when I went to grab the handle to pull
myself up she came falling onto me. Don't know if she got scared and
jumped or fell, but down we both went. We fell onto a big inflatable
floor and she started screaming. I picked her up and went to call for
the Wife and fell to my left knee. My left foot hurt something fierce.
Hobbled over to the side, reached over and handed Rose off (she was
fine, just scared), but I had to finish the course as there was no way
for me to get out. Get out and sit next to all the other 'adults' on
the bench and take off my sock (this is a no shoes place) and my foot
is swollen already! I told my wife, "I think I broke my foot." The b-
day boy's mom asks me if I'm oh k, and I told her the same.

Went to the doctor (2 days later, it happened on a Sat and I wasn't
going to sit in the ER for this), had an x-ray. 'Slight displacement
fracture of the fifth metatarsal." Essentially I broke the long bone
in your foot that is your pinky toe. Luckily they didn't cast me, I
get a "storm trooper" boot to wear under Dec 30th. Then probably a
walking boot until end of Jan/beg of Feb.

Yesterday I was cleaning the garage and there sit the bikes..lonely,
neglected..it is sad really. It is going to be interesting to see how
the "limp" leg responds after being out of Das Boot.
