I found a link to this blog in the touring section of Bike Forums in a

Good information and advice, like avoid putting baby turtles in your

So yesterday I was playing with a new headlight. I got a Rover II
Xtra LED: http://www.cygolite.com/products/new/Rover2/Rover2_Xtra_WB.html
(from City Cyclist, of course!) It is easily 10 times brighter than
the SunLite I was using. I love it. This morning when I was riding
down my street, there were parked cars and a car moving toward me.
When he saw the light he pulled over and let me through. That's never
happened to me before.

20 miles is a log way to ride in heavy rain without proper gear. Particularly with a 20 mile return at the end of the day. Some parts of my route also flood. And I'm a wimp.

When I move back to Washington State, I'll get the gear. It usually doesn't rain often enough around here (without lightning) to make it worth it. Short rides in the rain still work well.

my suggestions, if you are interested:
1. showers pass touring jacket (i use a similar one made by burley, not made anymore)
2. Pearl Izumi AmFIB pants...great protection...
3. good PI or other brand water proof shoes
4. optionally water proof socks
5. PI waterproof gloves or garden gloves with leather patch on the palms
6. good quality grocery bag for inside the helmet :)

what do you think?

I stay generally happy by not caring too much if I get wet, so long as I'm warm. Plastic bags inside shoes can help a lot in cold weather. Waterproof footwear is the only piece of gear that are worth it for me. Dressing in enough rain gear to actually stay dry just leaves me soaked in sweat instead. No matter how breathable some things are supposed to be, keeping rain out keeps sweat moisture in. I'll take the rain.

I was drenched to the skin on my top half in the morning and again in

i was not sweaty inside my jacket. this one has pit zips, side zips and a front zippper. so i open'em as i get warmer, if i need to.
paul, go to rei and check out the showers pass jacket. it is really good!

the PI shoes i bought are good if i clip in otherwise they are good waterproof shoes but they do not provide much of a grip on a platform pedal. in this regard, my salomon shoes are great, both nice grip and waterproof in the same shoe.

rantwick, i agree with you. i never had any of these things when i was in canada though :(
i used a woolen stocking cap and a heavy kmart el cheapo jacket LOL!

i want to buy a showers pass sometime. i bought the burley jacket (women's cut, form fitting thingy) because the shop agreed to sell it for about 50 bucks cheaper than the advertised price. but i have grown some nice stomach muscles since then
i need a larger jacket also because i can layer for a winter day!

I don't have that piece (it's the downtube cable stop, right?) but I
have a different version of the same thing that clamps around the
downtube. Also, check with the local shops- City Cyclist, Bikes Inc.,
etc. They have boxes of "old junk" stipped from junked bikes that
come through the shops.

You could park at the greenbelt trail head on US-380 just east of
Denton and ride the trail north to one of the parks on Lake Ray
Roberts. I'm sure Chris could give you some good info. I believe that
is where he does his S24Os.

I've camped by myself a few times. You hear all kinds of things
walking around outside of your tent. It can be a little spooky. The
good thing is that there aren't too many things left in Texas that can
eat you. Although I did see a mountain lion and a cub next to a creek
in Irving a while back...

Excellent! When are we camping?

Yes, Lake Ray Roberts is where I've done my S24Os. From my house it
is roughly 20 miles to the Johnson Branch (north end) or Isle du Bois
(east end of dam). Both are State parks.

I personally prefer the northern park. I think being farther from
Denton (and DFW), it seems less populated.

If you park at the Greenbelt trail head, it is approx 10-15 miles as I
recall to the dam.

If you need more details or suggested ride routes, let me know.

Thanks, Chris!

Does anyone know a bike-friendly route to Greenbelt Trailhead from Irving? I wonder if I could ride it all the way from home.

I have seen it and added another comment. He'd not have passed had it
not been OK...

As in a car race, it's not fair for uncompetitive riders to ride so as
to change the finish - unless they happen to be a teammate of a leader.

It was a darn nice thing for him to say, though!

I found this link on a news forum. It's not bike related but it's
really cool.

That was pretty interesting. I had heard about people being killed by
leopard seals. Yet another reason I won't go into the ocean.

There was a tweed ride in Washington D.C. this past weekend.
