They just launched Storyline for anyone interested in creating online interactive modules. I've had a beta version for the last few months and I like it. You can easily download a free 30 day trial. Here are some examples of how it's used: http://www.articulate.com/products/storyline-showcase.php

Why the heck is this software so much more expensive than comparable products? Rhetorical question....

Ya, its expensive. They offer an educational discount of 50% off an it comes with two copies, so you can load one at home. They accept PO's or they'll send you the discount code to purchase with a credit card.

Still $700 is a lot ...and if you have no guarantee of use of what you create.. wow!!  Looks very cool.. but there have to be cheaper alternatives..

I totally agree. Softchalk is an example. Storyline or Articulate are for people who have a particular purpose for it and have the $$ to buy it, but there are definitely alternatives that should be looked at first to fit your needs.

I was Beta testing Storyline and I really like the product, and the
company as a whole.

Interactives and functions are by and far, much easier to create and
manage than other products I have used. One selling point I was
interested in was the HTML 5 compliance and use with mobile device
(Articulate has a slick iPad App). There are also wonderful audio and
video editing tools right in the interface, and it handles both media
very well. I will also give a nod to the scripting (triggers)
implementation which makes interaction and function work easier to use
for non-programming types. For faculty or staff use, it has many of
the same functionalities as Powerpoint, which will help the learning
curve if we open this up as a tool for the campus.

Support and response during Beta was amazingly quick and Articulate is
very dedicating to promoting quality instructional design.

Other applications can do many of the same functions for less cost,
but I would recommend giving the trial a test or check out their
tutorials (http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/
articulate-storyline.aspx).

Cheers.

Thanks Michael for sharing this.  I've been using Articulate Studio for 8 months now and they are have a very helpful online community set up on their eLeaarning Heroes site and I have a learned about "design" from them.  In terms of what you "need", that depends on what you do and need to accomplish in your job.  While there are a lot of instructional design positions in all kinds of organizations (the field is not limited to higher ed), the focus of a position can vary.  I will be buying Storyline.

Michael, do you know if Articulate has an app for the iPhone?  I ask b/c you mention the app for the iPad.

I only did the trial of The Articulate Studio and I really enjoyed the
tools and interface, which is what moved me to get more information on
Storyline and eventually help Beta test (Albiet very late to the
testing, I was only in the last month). I know others in the district
probably have better insights into the software though I am not sure
they are part of this group.

What also piqued my interest with Storyline was the HTML5, Flash, and
App compatibility. The iPad/iPhone App. It can be downloaded and used
with (I believe) only Storyline content because of its' ability to
export HTML5 products. Again, I didn't get much time with the Studio
trial, so I am not sure about its' use with mobile devices.

The e-Learning Heros site is amazing and I've learned and reinforced
good design principles, best practices, and general learning theory
through reading the posts, watching tutorials, and participating in
the forums. The community is very generous in sharing their
experiences, both good and bad, to help others improve. Can't say
enough about it really. I find it extremely helpful.

We did buy a couple copies of Storyline and I have been working on a
few projects this week. Still finding a few glitches and bugs since it
is version 1.0 basically, but they aren't hindering the capabilities.
Just little things. The most important use I see for me at this point
is the possibility to take Flash interaction that instructors have
created and quickly recreate them in Storyline, or at least that is
the theory. I will follow up with solid experiences over the next few
months.

Whoops. Just looked at the Articulate Mobile Player App and I believe
it is ONLY iPad, from what can tell.

I installed it on my iPad 1 and it works well.

Looking forward to your continued experience sharing on this. We have
a couple flash die hards, and it sure would be nice to easily convert
their work to HTML5 + CSS etc
