Why does Cyberduck check the timestamps of all files on a remote site when it knows which ones need updating?

Surprisingly, my searches for an answer to this seemingly basic question have been fruitless perhaps because I've not yet looked in the right place.  When I use synchronize to update a website, I quickly get a dialog box asking me to confirm the folders and files that are to be uploaded.  The selection is almost always correct. (Sometimes files that haven't changed get uploaded, but this is only an occasional problem.)  Nevertheless, Cyberduck checks the timestamp of every file on the server, which can take a long time for some of my webpages with a hundred or more associated files.  Worse, I often get a timeout error message during the process, which means the checking starts all over again.  If Cyberduck knows which files to update, why is it checking the other files?  Is there a way to turn this off and just upload the new or modified files?

Depending on the server we use the modification date or the checksum of a file [1] to determine its status. Only after that we know which files to transfer.

Hi David,

Thanks for responding to my query. I'm still confused. Cyberduck somehow figures out which files need updating early in the synchronization process and presents me with a dialog window to confirm that it has found the right ones. Why does it then compare every file associated with a site on the server with every one in the local folder? I have a site that I update once a week with perhaps a half dozen new files. Cyberduck correctly determines that these files need uploading and that the html file for the page their thumbnails appear on needs updating, but then it checks all of the hundreds of other files on the site that have not changed.
