I was looking in the files section and there are some pretty awesome
character creator spreadsheets for the first edition of Wild Talents,
but I don't see any up there for the EE. Anyone have something like
that in the works, or is that something I should go to work on myself
if I want to see it?

I have one that I use, but it needs a bit more work before it would be good enough to hand out.

It's not as good as the really awesome WT1 sheet that listed all the miracles in the book, and all the extras and flaws. In mine you have to type in the flaw cost manually.

On the other hand, when I'm in a hurry, building a bunch of characters for a game, I can just short cut it by putting the cost down without filling out the details. But I'd really like to have proper lookups, etc. Right now it pretty much just adds up the values. There's nothing fancy about it.

Is the sheet something you are actively working on? Part of my
reason for asking around was, well, because if something awesome like
the WT1E sheet was around, I'd love to use it, but also because I
wouldn't want to duplicate effort if someone else is already working
on putting together a WT2E version. :) Either way, I'd love to see
what you've got put together thus far, even if you don't believe it
fit for public consumption yet. ;)

Side question, more general - is there any official statement from
Arcdream about what is/is not allowable in a publicly distributed
character creator, spreadsheet or otherwise? Different companies seem
to have really different takes on where the line is.

If you give clear credit to the source and the owners of the material
that you're using, and if it's not for commercial use (i.e., you can't
sell it), it's usually fine. Best policy is to get in touch with Greg
and Dennis to show them what you have in mind and make sure.

My intention is to work on it, but I'm a bit busy at the moment. You probably shouldn't wait for me.

In fact, if you were to work on the WT2 sheet, I'd leave mine alone and work on my WT1 spreadsheet to convert it into a true Godlike spreadsheet.

Man, I wish there was a ransom for someone to write a Wild Talents
character creator.

I wonder if there'd be enough interest to not just do a spreadsheet,
but a full-fledged app? Hopefully written in Java or the like so
that'd it be usable on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

If anyone is a programmer who could do this kind of thing, get in
touch with me.

Shane, what about HeroLab?

They have made badass character creators for Savage Worlds and Cortex,
which I use, plus they do the character creators for Mutants &
Masterminds, World of Darkness, AD&D 4th edition and 3.5, and it seems
like some others. Everyone in my groups uses HeroLab because of its
awesomeness.

Herolab looks great, if only it would work on Macs. If we do an ORE
app, I want Dennis and me to be able to use it without buying a pile
of compatibility software. :P

Metacreator would be another option...

Also we've had a good deal of luck tossing together a google apps spreadsheet for various systems and sharing it between players which works
quite well for Skype play and the like as multiple people can edit the document 'live'...

You'd still need Windows, but you could run it on a virtual machine like
VirtualBox, which is free. I use it some on my Linux machine, and my
boss, who recently installed it on his Mac, has had good luck. A copy of
XP, or maybe even 2000, would be pretty easy to turn up for cheap, on
eBay if nowhere else.

I seem to recall someone from HeroLab inquiring about interest in a Mac version on RPG.net, so that may be on the horizon.

HeroLab is very awesome. We use it for our Cortex and Savage Worlds
games and almost everyone in my group bought copies. We'd LOVE to
have it for ORE games. One of the greatest things about it is the
Tactical Console for controlling combat.

It rolls the dice for everyone, let's you manually adjust things to
reflect character rolls, tells you initiative order, let's you apply
wounds by location versus defenses in those locations, etc. It's my
favorite thing in a Character Creation software ever.

Agreed that Hero Lab is awesome. There is actually an open source
editor out there right now... If anyone is into scripting, they could
probably develop WT2 on Hero Lab...

I really like the idea of ransoming a character creator app or
spreadsheet. Some people out there have serious skill and could
probably develop a kick-ass program if they were given the go-ahead.

Is there any chance that Arc Dream would authorize something like
that?

I'm considering it.
