As the organizer of BostonHaskell, I thought that Boston would be a
good place to do this for several reasons:
- the large population of college students in the Greater Boston area
is an interesting pool of potential recruits
- there are a surprising number of local companies that employ
functional programmers (and some of them are hiring)
- the Boston Lisp Meeting and BostonHaskell are pre-existing bridges
between the academic and commercial FP communities that a jobs event
should bring together
Many people I talked to at ICFP were interested in the idea, as were
people at the following BostonHaskell meeting. Given that, I am
planning to organize a "Jobs in Functional Programming" event in
Boston. My current plan is to schedule the event for late October or
November (with goal of getting the attention of students before they
have jobs). That being said, my vision is of an event open to both
students and experienced functional programmers (since both would find
it useful).
As a first step in organizing this Boston "Jobs in FP" event, I would
like to reach out to the people I have not had a chance to talk to
about this.
In particular, please let me know if you are interested in any of the
following:
(a) volunteering to help organize the event,
(b) recruiting functional programmers at the event or
(c) attending the event as a job-seeker,
Thank you,
- Ravi Nanavati
