I have heard of using it for a TV, NAS, Server and many others. What are you going to do (planning to do) with your Cubieboard?

I'm looking at an OPC server in a manufacturing PLC data stream.

1GB version wifi opencv color blob and ar_recog detector connected to a robot running ROS. With the hope and desire I can do a stereoscopic camera feed in the long run.

512 version not sure likely but will post likely be used to replace a laptop on a turtlebot and run off the roomba battery. for that i need to make sure i can get prime sense drivers working for it and have more then 1 FPS.

Can I ask which OPC server you will be running?

Hi,

I'm using my Cubieboard to run ZoneMinder and supervise my flat with wireless cameras.
Currently one is attached and it works fine. Motion detection is done by the software and pictures are saved on the SATA disk attached.
I'm planning to install the second camera in the following days.

Kind regards,
Laszlo

I'm planning to use mine for environmental monitoring and control.  So far I have interfaced a rf receiver to it and am gathering data from my water tank (ie. how full it is) and from a prototype circuit monitoring my home brew process.  In the future it will also control the irrigation system.

I am using DRF7020D13 modules.  http://www.dorji.com/pro/RF-module/Low_power_transceiver.html
They are easy to use bidirectional modules that have a serial interface.  I had to use a couple of level shifters as they run off 5V.

Please, upload your files to a web site and only post links.

Sending a file of over 1MB to numerous recipients is still a waste of
bandwidth, even these days.

As for what I would like to do with cubieboard - just install a Debian
or other desktop system and see which applications work and which not
and what they are missing. Running a desktop on cubieboard or similar
board would save lots of power compared to a PC. The cubieboard is
quite underpowered to be used as regular desktop machine but for
testing one application at a time it should work. If no unresolved
problems remain a board with more memory and multicore CPU would work
I guess.

Thanks

I would make small low power desktop computer for daily use. I don't play games and cubieboard would be sufficient to work with libreoffice, firefox and sometime some music and film player. For now I'm waiting for a shipment, and trying to make expansion with VGA, S/PDIF, CVBS and other interfaces for cubieboard.

A friend of mine wants to control a webcam with a servomechanism,
using the Cubieboard.
I am helping out, but I do not know whether he can plug directly the
servomechanism to the Cubieboard inputs,
or whether he needs to buy a USB to UART converter.

Just FYI, there are cameras that include Pan and Tilt motor, WiFi IP
connectivity, night vision, motion and sensor alarm, etc, all of this only for
about $42:

I have a couple, they work beyond excellent. Remote controlled cameras are a
solved problem -- you can just buy one for very cheap, and it works.

As for me, I would love to make a fully autonomous robot based on an A10
device (a Cubieboard or an MK802). Similar to this experiment, only a bit more
advanced:

Haven't recieved the cubie yet but I'm waiting in excitement.

Planning to use Cubieboard for home automation. Have a wood (pellets) heater with digital thermostat that can recieve signals from another device. Trying out OpenRemote and other open source apps for linux/android/ios that can remotely set temperatures for my house via web, ios device etc.

The motherboard in the heater can also most likely be controlled directly by the cubie with a custom made connector.

I just started compiling the ROS (groovy) environment on the Cubieboard now, starting from the Linaro/Precise image and already had a few pitfalls (locales/lsb-detection/ros-bootstrap), though everything seems to be fine now.
Would love to hear from any other ROS/Cubies and their experiences so far out there.

I plan to use gscam with stereo PS3 eyes for now, as I had the code already working on x86,
but will try to move over to the asus xtion pro live which arrived last weekend. (Might perform better on the cubie, than having to calculate disparity from stereo cams.

HI Laszlo, I've got the same idea as you but performance of my cubiebioard is not as expected with zoneminder. Just one cammera. and image freeze and most of the times dont register movement, I mean, completely usless. Processor is at 97% most of the time (meassured with top command).

Of course same camara running zoneminder under ubuntu installed into an VirtualBox machine (1 GB RAM( works great.

My question, have you compiled it in a particular way that works fine for you?
My settings
1)cubieboard 1 GB RAM
2) Tested with wheezy and linaro, same results
3) Installed using apt-get install zoneminder

I'm not an expert at Linux at all, so if you can explain how you make it work would be great.

Regards

Martin

Hi Martin,

Yes, I also have performance issue with my Cubieboard. Using one camera it seems to be fully loaded, however for me it is working. I mean the picture stream is continuous and movement triggered recording is also working.
I have tried with two camera, but it was too much for this hardware.
I planned to post a question to the Zoneminder forum regarding the use of hardware acceleration for image processing, but did not do yet.

I think the CPU is fully loaded because the zm scripts are not using any image processing feature of the hardware. Everything is done by software.
It would be nice to make use of hardware resources, but I do not know whether it is possible with the current architecture of Zoneminder.

I also have a 1GB Cubieboard and using it with Linaro.
I also installed the precompiled package. I do not know whether there is a point to build Zoneminder on the target hardware. As far as I know most of the code is written in Perl.

I do not know what kind of camera you are using. I have a cheap Chinese one (Wansview). It provides a series of pictures (15-25 jpeg images per second) and not a video stream.
I'm using the default settings of Zoneminder, just configured the camera and thats all.

I'm really sorry that I could not help too much.
Probably you can get some more help on the Zoneminder forum.

Kind regards,
Laszlo

I am currently planning a little car PC for my Vauxhall Tigra Twintop. Tough work though, since I want to use Android, and therefore I am fiddling around with the kernel sources, adding modules for bluetooth (currently having problems with CSR) and other things.

If I will ever finish it will for sure still take a couple of weeks until everything is running as smooth as I suppose it to be, but that's what I got the board for - for the fun of it :)

Cheers,

Frank

Hi Black Stag,

I want to do a stereo vision system for avoid obstacles. What do you think about using a cubieboard for that ?, will I be able to run the algorithms in real time without any problem?
.

Thanks for all!.

Best Regards

Melisa
