Middletown rallies around Safe Driving Bill
What: Community leaders in Middletown will host a rally on the South Green to show support for the Safe Driving Bill currently moving through the State Legislature and urge our elected representatives including Senator Doyle to vote in favor of this legislation. The bill will expand access to driver’s licenses to all other-wise eligible Connecticut residents, regardless of immigration status. This legislation will benefit everyone in Connecticut by making driving safer, aiding law enforcement, lowering insurance costs, and generating new revenue to the state – and Connecticut should implement these improvements in public safety and revenue as soon as possible.

Where : South Green, Middletown, CT
Why: To urge our elected representatives from Middletown to join the governor and a majority of legislators in their effort to expand access to driver’s licenses to all other-wise eligible Connecticut residents, regardless of immigration status, will benefit everyone in Connecticut by making driving safer, aiding law enforcement, lowering insurance costs, and generating new revenue to the state – and that Connecticut should implement these improvements in public safety and revenue as soon as possible. We are close to having a majority of support for passage of the bill as an amendment. Illinois and Maryland have passed similar laws this year, joining Utah, Washington, and New Mexico, which have had similar laws for many years. The Colorado Senate and Oregon Senate have recently passed similar bills.
Who:
United Action Connecticut (UACT) is an interfaith, multi-racial, multi-lingual organization of congregations and community institutions crossing political, economic and urban/suburban boundaries with congregations across the state of Connecticut. UACT’s key initiatives this year are comprehensive immigration reform and passage of the CT Safe Driving Bill.
CONECT is a broad-based community organization made up of 28 churches, synagogues, and mosques from New Haven and Fairfield Counties that have joined together to take action on issues of mutual concern for the common good. Founded in November of 2011 at a convention in Bridgeport of 1,500 CONECT leaders, CONECT has focused its initial efforts on winning in-state tuition rates for undocumented students, pressing for public hearings on health insurance rate increases greater than 15%, and researching potential action strategies on predatory lending and job training programs. It is the original organizer of the Safer Driving Campaign.
