STATE LEGISLATORS FORM ANIMAL ADVOCACY GROUP

State Representatives Annie Hornish (D- Granby) and Alfred Camillo (R-Greenwich) announced today that they will co-chair the newly formed “Legislators for Animal Advocacy,” a bipartisan organization committed to raising awareness of animal welfare issues.

Legislators for Animal Advocacy will address policy issues that affect animals. In the spirit of informed decision making, they will host educational forums for policymakers, and build coalitions in support of commonsense, humane laws.

“Animals are sentient beings, and as such, we have a duty to treat them in a humane manner,” said Rep. Hornish, who represents the towns of Barkhamsted, East Granby, Granby and New Hartford. “I look forward to building a consensus among my colleagues in support of sensible animal welfare laws that reflect the public’s commonly-held values. Protecting animals from cruel treatment is not a partisan issue.”

“These challenging economic times do not mean that we cannot move forward with sensible legislation pertaining to animal protection. Treating animals humanely is part of being in a civilized society.” Rep. Camillo said.

Long-time animal advocate Representative Diana Urban (D- North Stonington), House Chair of the Children’s Committee, added: “Legislators for Animal Advocacy will give us a wonderful opportunity to continue to explore the circle of violence, and the link between animal abuse, child abuse, elder abuse, and domestic violence.”
