MALLOY RESPONDS TO PFIZER NEW LONDON HEADQUARTERS CLOSING

 

November 9, 2009 – Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, who is exploring a run for Governor, today responded to news that Pfizer will close its New London headquarters as part of its merger with Wyeth:

 

“Three weeks ago I urged the Governor to take action and get some basic questions answered about how Connecticut workers might be affected by this merger.  Now we know for sure that the New London headquarters is being closed – a huge blow to the city and to the region.  We’re told that ‘a majority’ of the 1,400 workers will be moved to Groton, but we don’t know yet if that means 10 jobs, 100 jobs, or some larger number.

 

“The truth is – one job lost is one too many.  It’s one more Connecticut family that will struggle to make ends meet.  One more sign that the state is continuing to hemorrhage jobs and lose ground to competing states in the region.

 

“Of course, some might try and paint this as a win for the state, arguing that keeping some jobs here was the best we could have hoped for.  I think it’s time we stopped setting the bar so low for ourselves, and started demanding accountability.  What action did Gov. Rell take to try and keep this location open, and to keep these jobs from being lost?  Did she call Pfizer, and if so when?  Did she meet with them, and if so with whom?  Did she know what was coming?

 

“It appears that once again Connecticut is responding reactively to bad news, instead of taking proactive steps that might have avoided the problem altogether.”
