News from Chile (as posted in the CCi list):
"Cinepata.com’s initiative is original in the national movie industry,
and maybe in Latin America, and permits that the same creators decide
which rights they want to keep reserved and which free and share with
the public. It changes the traditional copyright view and its logic of
“all right reserved”, that do not permit, at first, do any use of the
content by the public."

Here's the site: http://cinepata.com/

Even though I don't understand their language, the site design is
intuitive enough. I recognise the CC licenses and the links says MP4,
MPG. The mouse-over indicates the file size, and I could do a
right-click and get the Save As option.

More details below.

Dear friends,

Creative Commons-Chile team is happy to tell you that, together with
the writer and filmmaker Alberto Fuguet, today we have announced
officially that the web site Cinepata.com has licensed all its
catalogue under Creative Commons licenses.

Cinepata is a site that, in spite of its short existence, is a
reference of innovation in Latin American audiovisual indie
filmmakers, making available to download movies in several digital
formats like 3GP, MP4 and also full DVDs with ISO format. Within its
catalogue are important movies like the 2006 Huelva Latin American
Film Festival nominated  "Se Arrienda" and “Lo que soñó Sebastián”
(2004) by the awarded Guatemalan writer Rodrigo Rey Rosa.

It is a great new for those who enjoy the movies and the opportunities
that the new technologies offer. And we believe it's also an important
new for latinamerican filmmakers who see in Internet distribution with
CC licensing a great opportunity to film distribution.

Attached you can find our press communication.

Best,
Claudio

-------

Alberto Fuguet and legal movie downloading:

Cinepata.com license all its catalogue

under Creative Commons

The initiative, leads by the writer and filmmaker Alberto Fuguet, is
original in Chile and permits download and use of audiovisual contents
selected by Cinépata legally, thanks to Creative Commons license (CC).
Starting today, all the content available in Cinepata.com will be CC.
Fuguet also has licensed his own movie “Se Arrienda” (2005) because he
thinks “it is time to take advantage from Internet, so more people
could watch the film”.

By launching its movie “Se Arrienda” (2005) for free and under a free
license, the digital distributor leads by Alberto Fuguet, Cinepata.com
officially adopts Creative Commons in its entire catalogue, the
current and the future one. Cinepata.com is a web site for free
download of different audiovisual contents by authors from
latinamerica.

Between the works included in the Cinepata.com’s catalogue there are
movies such as “Unos pocos buenos amigos” (1986) by Luis Ospina
(Colombia), “Lo que soñó Sebastián” (2004) by Rodrigo Rey Rosa
(Guatemala), “Como un avión estrellado” (2005) by Ezequiel Acuña
(Argentina), and “Se Arrienda” (2005), Alberto Fuguet directing debut,
who have expressed:

“This time, we decided free release “Se Arrienda” because we have the
distribution rights and I am the author, I think it is the moment to
take advantage from Internet, so more people could watch the film.
Diego Valenzuela, my producer, who also is a lawyer, is in full
agreement. “Se Arrienda” had a life in the off line world, it was
successful in the movie theatres, but it was years ago and it could
not be shown beyond the frontiers. Now, it is time to be digital, it
could arrive to many countries and enter in thousands of screens. The
idea is that other creators follow the example and it will”.

The objective of the web site leads by Fuguet is takes advantage from
the broad access that Internet offers to people. For that purpose,
Cinepata.com has an special curator for the catalogue, has adopted
technical measures to guarantee high quality in download (including
download for cell phone formats), and has licensed the works under
Creative Commons to guarantee free use for Internet users.

Cinepata.com’s initiative is original in the national movie industry,
and maybe in Latin America, and permits that the same creators decide
which rights they want to keep reserved and which free and share with
the public. It changes the traditional copyright view and its logic of
“all right reserved”, that do not permit, at first, do any use of the
content by the public.

For Claudio Ruiz, president of ONG Derechos Digitales and public
leader of Creative Commons Chile, this project "is the evidence that
Internet is a tool that permits developing access to knowledge and
culture for everybody. Cinépata’s choice of Creative Commons makes
available an interesting catalogue of movies and other audiovisual
works and, also, guarantees freedom to use and reproduce those works,
and them could flow freely".
