Today, we're launching a feature on Image Search to help you find images that you can use for free, while respecting the wishes of artists and creators. This feature allows you to restrict your Image Search results to images that have been tagged with licenses like Creative Commons, making it easier to discover images from across the web that you can share, use and even modify.

This is a brilliant feature. I'm teaching and would like to focus on
that rather than on any possible infringement issues.

While it's definitely a good thing to have, Google's image search
tends to be inaccurate despite their best efforts at determining image
subject. It's very broad.

If you're ever in a hurry, don't forget Flickr's long standing
Creative Commons search feature, which is at
http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

Since humans label / tag these flickr images, it's easier to find what
you want there. Great for finding relevant CC-licensed images for
presentations.

Nice find, Ivan! Very impressed with the results.

However, it choked on local place names, so its "computer vision" search doesn't fall back on actual tags in Flickr, which is surprising. (But hey, it's an alpha release...)

That said, the image quality of the searches that manage to go through are fantastic! Hope to see this improve.

Yeah, today I was teaching at SP. I showed it to my student. 40 new
users in one day! :)

If Google images' filtering is not so good, then what happens if a
developer finds a falsely tagged image under CC license and the
following scenario happens:

Ignorant to the fact that the image is not under CC, the developer
then uses it on their own website. Years pass until one day they get a
letter from a lawyer asking them to put the image down and pay
royalties/damages.

I'm wondering what would happen in this case? Could the developer
argue that to the best of their knowledge the images were under CC?

Hmmm... people who know to search for CC-licensed images would probably look out for the CC logo and license terms where the image is originally hosted. (Is that a fair assumption to make? I'm basing it on my own search-and-use behaviour.)

That's where ImageStamper comes in. It shows that an image was CC-licensed when you used it. (CC licenses are non-revocable, IIRC, i.e. you can't license something and then decide to remove the license, thus rendering all previous use illegal.)
