I'm heading early to the Gorge for some hiking and sleding and will probably start at Bingen.

I am confused where to fly. The gorge looks really weak. The coast
winds look ok at launch level (500ft) but the winds aloft look really
strong.

I just called Todd T., he is at Bingen and reports winds are approx 5
east in the LZ. So, maybe the winds on the south launch are a bit
stronger. Todd reports several other people are on their way to
Bingen also.

The winds out at cliffside are reporting a westerly direction. So,
apparently there is a split gradient between Hood River and The
Dalles.

Anyway, I'm heading to Bingen.

Oops, Tom just posted as I was typing.... well, compare and contrast our reports....

Today at Bingen wasn't spectacular in terms of flying but it was pretty interesting from a weather perspective. MM5 got things almost right (strong inversion, E winds down low) but went way overboard on the strength of the winds on launch. No wind, warm launches contrasted with cold and fairly strong E winds in the LZ. The air was boaty without there being any useable lift. When conditions are stable, the gorge seems to act as a pipe.

Deanna, Todd, Dave, Tom N, a local HR pilot and I had 1-3 flights apiece. I had a nice couple of hikes up. It was just a nice day to be outside, whether flying or hiking or whatever.
