CASCADE PARAGLIDING CLUB –  MEETING MINUTES OF MAY 6, 2008

1. Guests/new members: Tom Nosack a new P1 working with Kelly.  Viener visiting from South Africa.
2. Site reports: Steve Forslund and Mark Sanzone flew a new site, Gales Peak.  It faces NE and is close, but a serious hike up (1 hour).  Launch is ~1400 (summit ~1600), LZ ~300.  The launch is the road at the top of a new clear cut and the LZ is a large grass field.  This is lumber company land but they allow hunters and hikers in on the weekends per the sign.  Contact Mark/Steve for more info.
3. Flight reports:
4. Treasurer’s report: $9128, up from $8,823 last month.
5. Upcoming events:
1. May 10: Diary Air (Sollie).  This is an informal and free fly in but we do want pilots to sign in at the LZ.  There will be awards for Spot landing and Duration. We may have a “bomb drop” and XC fun comp as well. A porta potty is on order and there will be snacks served.  Mark Sanzone will send out email with more details.
2. May 24 -26: Starthistle (Woodrat).  The theme is Chinese – “Year of the Rat”.
3. June 8 -14: West Coast Paragliding Comp at Woodrat.
4. July 3 – 6: Festival of Free Flight (Black Cap, Lakeview, OR)
5. July 6 – 12: Rat Race (Woodrat)
6. Oceansideopen wrap up: CB reported that we raised close to $4000 for Habitat for Humanity which will be presented later in May with some press coverage.  Mark Sanzone is working on the thank you letters.  Thank you to all who helped!
7. Bylaws: The proposed amendments passed unanimously with the 55%  of active vote needed.  (See emails from Dan Wells)
8. Flutag: This is the Red Bull sponsored “flying” event at Waterfront Park on August 2nd. Chet, Jay and his roommate have applied (but what they are doing is top secret for now).  CPC has offered to sponsor.  Lance offered to head up a CPC entry and is working on the concept now.  The proposal must be in by May 10, and only the top 30 submissions will be accepted.  CPC will entertain committing some funds once an entry is accepted.
9. Spaghetti dinner proposal for Star Thistle: This will be a fundraiser for the local school on Saturday night May 24th at the Haley’s place. (Note: Sunday night is the event BBQ)  Sarge is heading this up but George, Pat, Carla, Bob, Toby, Mary Beth and Mark Forbes all agreed to help.  $150 was approved by vote to fund this effort.  (Club will be paid back by money collected at the dinner).
10. Paragliding photography:  Ancil Nance presented his tips on how to take better pictures of paragliding and anything else.  Thank you Ancil, and thank you Dan for volunteering his pictures from Hawaii to be critiqued.
11. Safety presentation: Kelly Kellar covered:
1. Risk Management
2. Terrain clearance and thermal flying close to the hill
3. Avoiding blow back
4. Sketchy trends he has witnessed on launch, in the air and landing.
12. $250 was approved by vote for Larry B at Woodrat who broke his ankle replacing the windsock at mid launch.
13. Mark Forbes closed with a suggestion that you may donate some of your tax return or stimulus to the USHPA foundation for site preservation.

Next Meeting: June 3

A couple of corrections to these minutes...  Miscommunication between Mark and me.

The $150 for the spaghetti dinner was (as best we recall) voted as a donation with no expectation of being paid back.  Anybody recall differently?

The next club meeting is June 10 not June 3.

Hello CPC’ers.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at Star Thistle.  Flying has been tremendous so far, with XC flights beyond Grants Pass, out and backs, etc.

Bring your best Year of the Rat garb.  You will have the opportunity to win one of the coveted trophies hand crafted by our resident artist, Jim Tibbs.

Finally, on behalf of the club and Larry B, I wanted to say thank you for your generosity.  I have received PayPal contributions for Larry from the CPC club, as well as additional donations from 5 CPC individuals.  I am forwarding those on to Larry.  He is recovering quickly.  I can assure you he appreciates your sentiments.

Regards,

Paul Murdoch
