CPC Meeting Minutes
July 10, 2012
East Bank Saloon
Club President, Alan Flemming, began the meeting at 7:34. After spotting an unknown, he asked if there were any new members or guests present. Dan identified himself as new but old too – an old balloon pilot friend of Reed's who is newly interested is paragliding. Corey E. and Sarah identified themselves as guests. They became interested in paragliding after a recent tandem flight with Dave. Thanks to Reed and Dave for your continuous ambassadorship.
Rat Race discussions came next - right after Reed arrived. It appears that our club was well represented in both the Rat Race and Rat Race Sprint events as well as on the event's volunteer staff. Dave C. and Dan W. talked about their racing experiences followed by George M who talked mostly about the good work done by our volunteers. He also mentioned that there were several reserve throws but no major injuries.
Lakeview was next on the agenda and began with Alan mentioning that Jim B. won the Spot Landing contest. Jim B. then gave us a quick overview of his 50 – 60 mile XC days. Well done, Jim.
Alan then brought up Matt W.'s Sugar Hill reserve throw and asked Matt W. to describe what happened. He told us about his almost too close to terrain encounter with a monster paraglider eating thermal – all recorded on his vario's track log. Good job, Matt. Here is a link to his story: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/cpcl/JiK20pYZsoU<https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#%21topic/cpcl/JiK20pYZsoU>
Matt W.'s reserve throw lead to a more generalized discussion about Risk Management and the reporting of incidents. Jim B. offered that it is unwise to trust another person's assessment of risk. It appeared that everyone understood Jim's point and agreed. Mark F. added that, from an USHPA insurance perspective and a knowledge perspective, reporting incidents is a good thing. He thanked Matt W. for his report. Mark also noted that USHPA has just successfully renewed its group insurance policy. For more information on the specifics of this policy, go to: https://www.ushpa.aero/member_insurance.asp
Stu C. next gave us an overview of a new potential launch site near Yale lake. Its launch is from a mostly undeveloped subdivision named Cross Water Ridge. The launch owner is a pilot and still quite supportive of our efforts even after a few overly helpful club members cut down a few wrong trees. He needs the County to approve his site plans before more negotiations are possible. It large potential LZ is owned by an elderly gentleman who seems equally supportive. Stu suggested that we should make landowners honorary club members. The club seemed to agree but no motion to that effect was made. Stu will continue to guide and monitor progress. Thanks Stu.
Next topic was the Oceanside launch. Alan said that Brad H. talked to State Representative Betty Johnson about the idea of a park and the she seemed to like the idea.
Stu mentioned that he would be willing to have our previously discussed tree clinic at his place. Sarge suggested that some Tuesday night might work. No date or time has been set.
Finally, Dave C. has offered to share his movies with us since Roby explained that our video library is in an unknown location. His videos include Broken Toe Acro, Fly Hard, and Fly Harder. No system has been established to support this borrowing.
The meeting ended informally at 8:40.
