a comment on fire danger. In the old days it always used to amaze me how much rain it took before the Toutle got reopened in the fall. This time of year when an agency closes land, they are looking for SOAKING rain before they open it back up. Usually in our environment here that means at least a few days of steady rain. Light, brief rain doesn't get into the ground very well and dries quickly, even west of the Cascades. The consequences of fire are so devastating that landowners can't just hope and trust that none of us pilots, bicyclists, hikers etc. smoke or have hot exhaust pipes, and the fire across the river from the hill is pretty convincing evidence of present risk. -Pete
