Monday seems to be the busiest day at work, but a flying opportunity after a week and more of being grounded resulted in a "hooky" afternoon. Peterson looked like it might offer some fun today, and it looked a bit on the high side when looking at the Corvallis airport winds (12 - 16).
Met Peter D there at 3 and we launched at the lower launch/LZ and were able to bench our way up above the peak. The wind was about 8 at launch with occasional cycles to 18, but it was surprisingly pretty steady 12mph up near the peak and out in front of the butte, and SSW all afternoon. It was warm enough to fly without a coat, and a little gusty to make it interesting. We flew for almost an hour with enough lift available that we practiced getting low enough to land in the saddle using weight shift and ears and then pushing out front into the lift to regain altitude again. I got a call from work so I did top land lower down the hill. I relearned that I need to practice finding my C's without looking since I needed to pay attention to the ground when descending the last few feet. I didn't have a problem controlling the wing this time with just brakes, but I could have been drug around if a gust had come through when I touched down.
Stan M from Eugene showed up for some great kiting and short flights - it was perfect for strong wind kiting. It was fun to see him quickly morph from being drug to kiting like a pro. Irish Mike showed us all how to kite up the hill and control a wing. He arrived last but made up for it with his tips and wit.
We left before the sun and finished out the evening at Humpty's Dump with beer and burgers. It just doesn't get much better (unless you are Henzi and are flying from one state to the next).
