Things are moving fast with getting our new coworking space up and running. We've been doing business under the trademarked name "Space Station Coworking" for a few months now, but we're now considering changing the name before opening.

We are aiming to be a very professional coworking space with a mix of tech, social enterprise and creative membership.

Could you please provide some feedback on the name? What type of feeling does it evoke?

Ask your members! :)

Give them a chance to be a part of co-creating the name. What it sounds like to us doesn't matter. We're not joining.

What it sounds like to them is what matters.

So we have about an even split in our committed membership base between who does and does not like the name. The three of us founders liked it, but we're now tossing around other names due to some of the feedback we've received.

Thanks Alex - we certainly respect your opinion and admire Indy Hall.

I agree that your members should be part of the decision. It's a fun way to get their input and for them to be an important part of the development of the space.

However, since you asked, I don't get a feeling of "very professional" from the name Space Station Coworking. I'm picturing comets, aliens, and red shirts  (which are all very fun! unless you're an unfortunate red shirt), but not professionalism.

Also, if you aim for something a bit unique, then you'll be able to track our name much easier if you're looking for online mentions. Not something so unique that people have a hard time saying or spelling it, but unique enough that you'll stand out. And no, I didn't follow my own advice when naming my space. While it's apt given that we're a coworking space, the number of times the word "camaraderie" appears in my google alerts that aren't about our space is a high percentage.

Have a brainstorming session with your members. Beer, whiteboards, sticky notes, and fun together could yield great results.
r.
