Hi all,

To get away from the daily life and get a lot of work done, I've thought maybe going out of town and working might be a fun idea. Get to see another town, another coworking spot, get some things done.

Has anyone else done this? Do you allow people to buy a couple of days?

I thought it might be neat to do some sort of minimal "coworking exchange" thing - get to be productive and also connect with others.

LooseCubes does this regularly

Rob, you should look into the Coworking Visa, too - an international network of over 200 coworking spaces allowing coworkers from elsewhere a few days of desk &community time. You can find participating coworking spaces on the Coworking Wiki.

There's an article on Deskmag about 'Coworking Vacations', too - with a focus on small islands - but the principles and benefits are the same!

Cheers,

We do it all the time Rob; there is no better way to experience other collaborative cultures, environments, and spaces, than to get out there and experience them.  The Cospace in N. Austin does have an option to just buy a day or two but I'm really answering the other half of your question; I find that I'm often much more productive when I get out of a space in which I'm familiar and comfortable and work some place else.

Where have you thought about going?

Chiming in here, too - I love traveling and one of my favorite parts about traveling these days is the fact that I can drop into a coworking space in almost any city I visit, even if it's just for a day or two.

It's so great to find places that are different but still familiar in a way. A great coworking space can feel like "home away from home" very quickly! Can't recommend it enough.

I also urge our members to do this when they travel. It's always interesting to hear their takes on other coworking spaces.

The Coworking Visa is a basic exchange program; There are also several subgroups of Coworking spaces that have their own exchange programs.

I have had quite a lot of luck just cold calling coworking spaces on behalf of my members to see if we can set something up; I haven't had a "no" yet.  Sometimes they sign up for the Visa Program because they find out about it when I call. :-)

Nearly everybody has some kind of arrangement fro a couple of days at a time.

For living space, we are talking abotu having a place ont eh wiki for exactly this kind of exchange so watch this space

Sorry to say Loosecubes is shutting down so that is no longer an option right now. Creative Density does participate in the Coworking Visa giving two free days to out of towners that are part of another coworking space, and we've had coworkers do workcation from all around the US in the last few months. Winter and ski season is coming up so we invite even more coworkers form around the world to stop on by.

I highly recommended checking out the Wiki or just calling a space before we had. If free days aren't available then most spaces do a day pass.

As a space owner, I love it when members do this and offer feedback and take pictures of what they like about other communities. This has helped us make Creative Density a better community from the new perspectives and is greatly appreciated. I also feel more connected to the other space owners after getting a glimpse into their space and often reach

These days, we are working on CoPass, an open-source, interoperable platform with, to start, the only ambition of facilitating mobility among coworking spaces. Coworking Visa is great but as people do not know exactly their rights, they are not confortable with asking for their free days ( 1, 2 or 3 ?). In many cases, the person they reach at the coworking place they want to go is not even aware of the program. At Mutinerie, we'd like to see more nomadic workers, people from everywhere in the world. CoPass will give some clarity and fluidity to all this, bringing mobility to the next level.

Has there been further talk about getting the Coworking Visa brought into the 21st century?  Being in this group for the last 2+ years there are definitely a core of us that understand it is out there and available, and we use the wiki to find out which spaces take it (when they list it).  But if I had a nickle every time I heard someone ask whether an exchange program was available between coworking spaces I would be retiring early.

Is there any chance we could get this built into the listing on sites like Goodcoworking.com while the excitement and push for that site is still high?  At the end of the day I'd love to see something that allows veterans and newbes alike to find a space to hang for a day or two when travelling, as well as clearly defining what they are willing to allow.  Do any of the other listing sites out there (minus loosecubes RIP) note this easily?

Hi Joel

Here in the UK we have developed NearDesk.  It is a card which allows you to move from space to space within the registered network.  Unlike the Coworking Visa, you have to pay for deskspace that you use, but you can do this on a PAYG by the hour basis.  We are fully up and running at our 'showhome' at View61 (www.view61.co.uk) in London and will shortly be rolling out to around 100 locations around the UK.  The price for the deskspace is set by the coworking centre.  Its a simple, touch in, touch out system that allows you to move from space to space.

Is this what you mean by moving into the 21st Century?

You guys are definitely in the 21st century with that system, but I actually was wondering how we revive the coworking visa as a concept to allow free access (to a point) to spaces around the world.  We've had this since 2008 (?), but marketing and educating people has ebbed and waned.

After throwing this out there I decided to rework the visa logo that a few spaces have been using and add it to my email signature (to try it on).  I added a couple pieces to it.  Of course our space name is in the middle, but our country location is to the left, and the days we allow for visa visitors is the number to the right.  I thought it gave it a vintage visa stamp look and provides all the info I think most would need on the fly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks & God Bless,
