After a recent trip to Los Angeles and being frustrated trying to find
a local co-working space. I figured there must be a directory of
facilities somewhere. I could not find one. I got to thinking that
we had done a project recently for a directory of a different type of
business. I spent an hour or so retrofitting it to co-working and
pushed it out.

You can find it here:
http://wurkspaces.com/

If something else exists let me know. You should be able to add your
own space or a space you visit without logging in. If you all hate it
just let me know, if you like it and have additional functionality you
would like to see just let me know. I know that right now it only
supports locations in the US. I will look at changing that soon if
people are interested in the project. Again not looking to step on
toes, just wanting feed back. I was going to add a flag to denote
those that support in the VISA program as well.

Flame away. : )

Be nice if non American locations could be supported. The rest of the
world does not use 5 digit post codes and this site has it as a
mandatory field.

My first thoughts is it does seem to dup much of the wiki (thou a page
on the wiki of active/open sites would be an improvement).

Would be most helpful as a database and not just another list of
spaces like the wiki. The map is an excellent first step, but I'd love
to, for instance, be able to click on Seattle and get a list of all
the spaces there.

Cool idea, though -- hope people continue to contribute. Also, if I
mosses something in my cursory viewing please let me know!

In the search box just type seattle while in the map view or you can access via http://wurkspaces.com/directory/map/washington/seattle or http://wurkspaces.com/directory/washington/seattle  The structure is all there, just the UI needs work.  imho this is the major advantage over the unstructured data of a wiki.

Yeah I think I mentioned only supported US locations for now.  I will work on supporting international locations shortly.  We harvested from an existing project we had lying around for a proof of concept, so it wasn't an intentional sleight to international facilities, I promise.

My first thoughts is it does seem to dup much of the wiki (thou a page

It dupes facility listings, but imho the unstructured nature of data in a wiki actually hinders rather than helps promoting existing facilities.  However, a wiki is the perfect tool to collaborate on trying to form new spaces.  Again, that is just my  view point and why I threw together a proof of concept and asked for feedback.

Things I would love to do are add support for co-working visa program, international support and allow uploading of facility logos.  Also, I will have one of our designers look at addressing some UI issues.

Additionally we have some bigger ideas in store that should really help drive traffic to existing facilities.

The other major problem with wikis is that the non-geeks in the room (which is more and more every day) don't know how to use them, well or at all. This is a great step in the right direction. Lots of directions this can go, but I'm glad someone took the lead! Looking forward to seeing what's next on the roadmap.

We've had lots of conversations about shared needs between spaces, so I hope that improvements can be democratized a bit. I'd recommend creating a uservoice.com account so people can add suggestions and then vote the most valuable things up to the top.

Great, great stuff!

This looks great. Thanks for doing this. I wonder if maybe
there is a way to add the cross use membership component
that has been in discussion on this board to this piece? It
would be nice to have a central coworking directory like
this that also includes info on the sites with the
spaces that have "visas" as one called it to each other.

I am the first to admit that I am a non-Geek and have little
knowledge in how doable this might be.

Thoughts?

Derek: this is *great* piece of work! (Said as someone who has spent
altogether too much time hunting for spaces in the past!)

All: Drew Jones and I have been discussing the topic of common
coworking software recently, and this post kindled that discussion
again.

Off-the-shelf tools like wiki's, blogs, etc. are great time-savers and
can get an idea off the ground quickly. However, their limits become
apparent at some point of growth. You could probably find a way to
tack disqus onto the wiki to add conversations, etc. but I'm sure you
all understand the problem and the limitations of that ad hoc
approach.

There has been talk in the past about open source membership
management software, etc. With coworking visas now in play, the
challenge of contacting an owner/manager when you're in town, finding
a space in the first place, finding/reserving a desk, managing
payment, etc. there's an opportunity for the right tool to simplify
the process of setting up and managing a space. With New Work City in
the wings here in NYC, I'm being reminded of all of these issues
again.

So I'm gauging interest in this project. There are enough hot shots
at work in coworking spaces, and enough great technologies out there
(OpenID, etc.) that we could build and sustain an open source project
like this.

Amit & I are working on JellyDesk, and are currently talking to a lot
of people & spaces about common issues and where we will add some
tools with this project. Yesterday Tony & I negotiated the New Work

from the landlord, who basically demanded more accountability &
predictability of NWC.

Todd, are you coming to Jelly @ my place on Friday? I just put up the

I wonder if having a section for landlords of buildings that coworking
spaces are in would be helpful for new coworking spaces? I'm sure our
landlord would give a testimonial saying that we've been good tenants
and that it makes for a nice addition to his building.

Todd (and all):

The idea of a open-source co-working software would be uber-great,
especially if built on an open-source CMS.

What's more, if we started with either Drupal or WordPress I could probably
contribute a significant amount of my time to it as I currently do implement
consulting for both of them with a focus on the more advanced features and
modules/plugins (vs. theming; bleh, I'm not a designer! ;-)

We have some interesting concepts in this area.  We offer all our space for free so we haven't much focused on the business of collecting payment.  However, we very much are interested in allowing co-workers to identify themselves and the space(s) they regularly frequent.  We have another project for our hacknights ( http://hacknight.gangplankhq.com/ ) that we might refactor and tie into the wurkspaces directory.  Anyhoo... We are certainly open for ideas and willing to help.

Tara,

Yeah map needs to be landing page... The downside to just grabbing some of our existing code and running is it isn't what we ultimately want.  The upside is it is something to start conversation that works and is real and functioning.  Our original concept is actually something along the lines of wurkers, wurkspaces and wurkups.  Where a wurkspace is a co-working or wurker friendly facility.  A wurker is someone looking to collaborate with others and a wurkup is the intersection of wurkers and wurkspaces.  We have several other items on deck, but if there is expressed interest I can try to put this higher in the queue.

Great thread, everyone!

I've talked to many of you independently, so I'm going to briefly
brain dump here.

After a very intimate year in this space, and after many conversations
with both coworkers, independents, entrepreneurs, as well as people in
corporate HR and real estate, there's definitely a new ecology of work/
workspace developing here. This probably isn't news to most of you.

This ecology is currently composed largely of independents,
independent entrepreneurs, and a small handful of corporate
outworkers; it is also composed of a growing cadre of coworking spaces
and local Jelly groups. People and places. To be fair, the ecology
also includes coffee shops and executive suites, and the people that
work there, even though these differ ideologically. But there are
several missing pieces.

In areas like New York City, but elsewhere as well, there's a real
estate component that can't be avoided. Many current spaces started
because "we got a good deal" on space somewhere, or because a forward
thinking small business owner was willing to let others utilize unused
office space. I realize I'm generalizing here, but please bear with
me. This model isn't scalable. I'm not even sure it's desirable
because living in borrowed space isn't sustainable over the long term,
and I'm not sure coworking owner/operators are really prepared to be
in the landlord business, which is what they are in the minute they
start charging money for space and services.

To the point of this thread, the necessary technology infrastructure
is missing, as well. This hasn't been a problem, because we are all
early adopters, and can get buy on our wits and our network of friends
in coworking. However, at some point this movement is going to take
off. Office space is the #2 cost in most businesses (after people,
which are #1). I can guarantee that every Fortune 1000 company in the
United States is looking for ways to reduce cost #2 (and #1) given our
immediate economic situation. So, take off may be sooner than we
think.

My feeling is that it's time to compare notes, to look at the
infrastructure, and to make sure that it evolves in a way that
benefits and serves the community. Forget about the tags "coworking",
"Jelly", etc. for a moment, and consider the near future in which work
and workplace is increasingly defined as a network of intentional
local spaces, and as communities of working peers with something in
common beyond the accidental fact they work for the same company.
Good technology will make it easier to open/operate spaces like those
we've come to love.

Thanks,
Todd

I'm very new to this whole thing. I find the energy, synergy and collaboration of it all very exciting. We have just submitted our plan to the bank and are waiting for the "word"...
In the meantime, I would agree that real estate is an integral part. The thing that excites me most about this is that it allows me to combine my two areas of expertise: real estate and small business w/my passion for problem solving and helping others achieve success.
I believe that this is an ideal time to be entering the "coworking arena" and am looking to create a scalable model for that reason.
In my humble opinion, the timing is ideal from "both sides". For 1. more and more people will be entering the "independent" work forces if the economy continues as it is, and more and more companies will be looking to reduce costs. Secondly, I came into coworking because I saw it as an opportunity to lease space in a commercial building that I have listed. It was originally built w/larger shell spaces for sale or lease. It's a unique scenario because the building is in a large mixed use development. It is currently the only commercial space in a subdivision of 900 homes. So it's not in a major commercial center and therefore appeals primarily to locals, folks who work from home, and very small 1-2 person businesses. We had the owner develop plans for smaller offices after we took over the project, but found few prospects could "wrap their head around" coming in and choosing a space and having it finished. Cost was often an issue as well.
Anyway, the point is, that finding similar types of properties (where it could be a "win-win") could be an inherent part of the process. Developing a criteria of "what to look for" in space could vary, but still provide a framework that could be scaled, I think.

I'm anxious to know more about how you monitor the space, the logistics of billing, "policing", dealing w/people being too loud on the phone, bringing their friends in, etc.
I also have questions regarding the printer/copier/fax part. Assuming you must have staff there to keep that running? How does billing work, does it cover the costs, etc.

I'm happy to contribute to the process however I can. I appreciate all of you for your contributions!

Ok, I'll chime in...

I've been purposefully silent in much of the discussion about
coworkingnation and other software projects because I've been wanting
to see where they go on their own. I've got 10 years in the software
industry and I have a good feel for what projects work and where they
fall short. The biggest issue I've seen is one where technology is
considered the problem and the human elements are overlooked.
Coworking has so many players and so many variations that there are
many obstacles to overcome and technology alone is not going to get us
there. For example, let us consider the Coworking Visa program. It
was implemented quickly because of the low requirements to
participating. Everyone can do what they are doing already, have
their own pricing, their own criteria, and it's left to humans to do
the sticky work of working out the details and addressing problems
where they arise. Humans are good at that kind of thing.

I'm not saying I'm opposed to utilizing technology here... I'm far
from being a luddite. I'm skeptical because software that tries to do
too much and has such a diverse group of stake holders often isn't
worth the hassles introduced. I do believe there is a lot we can do
if we fully embrace the diversity and, like the visa program, come up
with solutions that don't require standardization. The power of
coworking comes from the people. Business centers have been around
for a long time but coworking embraces the human element and speaks to
a deeper need. If you can capture that with technology... wow.

Count me in as an opinionated beta tester.

It doesn't happen all the time, but I'm in 100% agreement with Jacob here :).

There are social problems, and there are technical problems. Tech problems are easy to solve, usually. Social problems are not.

We're discussing a combination of the two, and that's what scares me. I'd put the focus on baseline utility that solves technical problems (or, better yet, a SINGLE technical problem: like invoicing, desk reservation, etc), otherwise this thing will never launch.

And, as Jacob said...count me in as an opinionated and focused tester.

So there's an apparent need for a widely-known, and comprehensive
directory service for co-working spaces globally (which has been the
main topic of this thread), in addition – I believe – to more
evangelism and basic education on the topic of co-working itself (I'm
quite sure none of my prior fellow cube-dwellers have even *heard* of
the concept).

What I'm curious to know is if there is any software or technology
currently lacking which is needed to help facilitate or administrate
co-working locations? I think this is what needs to be defined.

I couldn't agree more about the basic education/evangelism. Tony and I have spoken at this at length (on this list and elsewhere). The wiki landing page has really weak definition language that, at one point, worked. But as the concept has evolved, the definition has not.

I'd love to see some simple coworking "brochureware". Functionality little less than a "find the nearest coworking community to you", but high focus on messaging and the "who, what, and why". A focused description on the diverse styles of coworking makes sense for this, as well.

Agreed on Alex's points. I'll add some thoughts in responses to JG:

So there's an apparent need for a widely-known, and comprehensive
directory service for co-working spaces globally (which has been the
main topic of this thread),

Yes, with one important caveat-- when creating a central directory, we run the risk of un-starfishing ourselves.

I believe strongly that coworking is not black and white, but a whole spectrum of color. Any sort of central repository for coworking spaces should have to be prepared to answer the difficult question of who's in and who's out.

One way I've thought of solving this would be to have user ratings of spaces, based on... wait for it... their adherence to the coworking pillars.

I'm picturing something exactly like CircuitCity's ratings (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=208372#CustomerRatings), but instead of "Picture Quality", "Sound", etc, it would be "Community" "Openness" "Accessibility" etc.

In other words, maintain the starfish-ness. Let the people decide what spaces fulfill which needs.

in addition – I believe – to more
evangelism and basic education on the topic of co-working itself (I'm
quite sure none of my prior fellow cube-dwellers have even *heard* of
the concept).

Yes, we should be thinking of how to make coworking more accessible. I attempted to do this a while back with http://coworkingny.com, which explains in realistic terms what coworking is and how to get started.

I also put the descriptions first, as communicating the names of the spaces is less important than communicating the services they offer. This also would let people quickly determine which direction they needed to go.

I never quite finished it, though, and obviously there are other spaces to add.

What I'm curious to know is if there is any software or technology
currently lacking which is needed to help facilitate or administrate
co-working locations? I think this is what needs to be defined.

There are a few areas I can identify as potentially very useful to coworking spaces:

- Desk availability administration
- Membership usage tracking
- An internet cafe-like sign-in system for people to get memberships and/or day passes while in the space (I'm talking with the great guys at NYCWireless about building something like this)
- A space- or city-specific social network where people can see who is working on what, and where.

Also, re: The definition of coworking, when we last discussed it I had left off with a question:

How does a decentralized organization such as this one collectively make a decision on something like the definition of the word "coworking"?

Hi all:

I'm currently working with a collective of people in the Atlanta area to put
together a co-working space somewhere in the Midtown Atlanta area and would
like to ask some questions. Today I've got just a few questions but I'm sure
I'll have more over time. I'm going to create separate emails for each
question. Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike,
I've spoken at length with Tessa Horehled (http://tessahorehled.com/) about the topic, and I know she's been actively working with people as a local contact. I highly recommend speaking with her if you haven't already.

i'm really interested in this thread, but unfortunately have nothing
to add since this development is way outside of my skillset. however,
i'd like to raise my hand to be a beta tester in anticipation of our
toronto facility to be open by this time this is ready.

Hey Serenity,

Congratulations on your upcoming space! I'd like to find out more about it, but it seems your mailing list registration is broken.

In any event, it appears you've mistaken this thread for a listings thread. We don't actually seem to have one for that right now, but welcome to the Google Group.

@Rest of community - What are we doing regarding a consolidated directory of coworking spaces worldwide? Seems like a legit need right now across the board. I'd like to work to fix this, but I think it should be a collaborative effort.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Existing solutions?

Oren,

We would love your help on the wiki project.  We also designed an open coworking directory to take over the directory function of the existing wiki but we didn't secure enough funds to take it on.  There are lots of directories out there though and each one has it's own secret sauce.  I believe the wiki has remained central because it's open and neutral but without a budget it's difficult to build and maintain something better then what we have already.  The design we came up with addressed many of these challenges and I'd still love to take it on someday.  Perhaps that time is soon.  Let's talk.
