Just curious as I've seen it vary widely and I plan to put some mental
energy towards figuring out why. Cohere is 45% women right now. How
about you?

We are only one month in, but of the 19 members, 11 are women, so...almost 60%

wow both percentages are impressive! Awesome!

Coming from conferences where speaker and attendance % for women is typically single digits, it's nice to see women really taking to coworking.

I'd be willing to bet that, at least at this still early stage of the game, there's still some "founder gender bias", in that communities founded by/led by a man/woman have a higher percentage of men/women present (respectively).

The women in our membership has certainly grown into the double digit percentages, which we're very pleased about, but it's taken time.

It might be anecdotal, but it seemed to grow the most on its own when I slowed my active of a role in daily leadership, and our other members (including the women who already worked here) got more active. That balance is just one more reason to work myself out of being a dependency.

I'll have to pull our current %, and any historical %'s we have recorded.

Back when the global coworking survey was done, women comprised about
1/3rd of the US respondents. Based on our other work, this was
probably a bit higher than the actual female rate, which at the time
we estimated at about 25%. This data is about 1 year old.

In our interviews with women we often hear that the habits of male
coworkers don't always lead to environments that are attractive to
women. In particular, the personal grooming and behavioral habits of
young male techies are often highlighted (note to young male techies -
take more showers:)).

Despite this, It seems from our point of view that women's coworking
share is increasing. Lots of studies show women are more naturally
collaborative than men (sorry guys). This could indicate in the long
run women coworkers will out number men.

Having said that, self-employment skews male. So does employment in
the tech industry. Given that many coworkers are in the tech industry
and self-employed, having more male than female coworkers - at least
today - is not a surprise.

I would love to see some real numbers around women and coworking. I'm
currently 50% women but usually a little higher than that.

Deskmag or Emergent - Are you doing another survey soon? Could we get some
more specific numbers around demographics for the next one?

At Xindanwei, we have two different kinds of membership: The regular coworking membership, and the coffee membership at the ground floor cafe. Funny enough that the regularly coworking coworking community is made up with 85% women!! And the coffee membership is exactly the other way around, 85% men!

Does it mean something? ;)

Hi,

co.up is a techie coworking space like steve describes, lots of men, few woman, without personal grooming problems - i really hate that this still seems to be an issue.

That said, here are the numbers. 24 coworkers and only 3 women. We try to increase the amount of female coworkers, but are facing a hen and egg problem. Because of our low number of women, new female coworker don't stay long because the lack of fellow female coworkers. Second problem, as we are a tech space people that are not at least a little bit into tech don't find a peer group here and the number of woman in tech is still low.

Cheers
Thilo

We are about 6 weeks in and have a 45% women and 55% men. This is
drastically different than my time in Toronto which was 90% men and
10% women after 4 months. I think it is important to have an equal
balance from the beginning or else it can become a 'boys club' real
quickly.

That's ok, Sasha. You reminded me of this conversation and now I have a chance to offer something as well. Thanks for that.

We've been open for 5 weeks and at present have 20 members, 75% are women. We're about to start a campaign to let more people know we exist, so we'll see if the ratio changes.

Wow that is one amazing Infographic - who did that for you?  I would love one of those on our website but all I can do is dream ‘cos I don’t know how to do them!

Brilliant!!

And echoing the previous commentator - thanks so VERY much for sharing,

Fay

PS Strangely here in rural England but located at the edge of an urban Business Park - our percentage is close to 85% male - against all our instincts, predictions and [former] marketing ‘messages’ - you can guess that we’re NOW - talking to the guys!

Hi,
At ClockWork cowork, space in Warsaw, Poland, we are operating since July (= 3 full months) and 90% coworkers are women... it is changing just now. But I guess, that we will stay with women at 60% - 66% ratio.

It is "STRANGE" even as for Poland :-)
