April 24: Join the Launch of The World’s Longest Invoice

Coworking friends:
Did you know 77% of freelancers will be stiffed by a deadbeat client
at some point in their career? Without any true protection,
freelancers are forced to spend precious time and money chasing their
checks or taking legal action, or they have to walk away, at an even
greater cost to pride and pocketbook.
That’s why Freelancers Union, Loosecubes, Freshbooks, and freelancers
throughout the country are launching The World’s Longest Invoice on
April 24 to raise awareness about this critical issue. And we're
hoping you'll join us.
The World’s Longest Invoice will jumpstart a fun and irreverent - but
critically important - nationwide conversation about how much it sucks
to not get paid for your work – and how it can be avoided.
Here’s where you come in: Coworking spaces nationwide are invited to
participate in any way they can, from projecting the growing World’s
Longest Invoice live on the wall to creating a special coworking day
to bring new members into your space.

In May, we’ll deliver the World’s Longest Invoice to lawmakers in
Albany to urge them to pass the Freelancer Payment Protection act in
New York. It’s model legislation that gives freelancers the same
protection as “traditional” employees – they can file wage claims for
the money they’re owed and get protection from the Department of
Labor. We are SO CLOSE to passing the bill and creating a historic
precedent in NY that can be replicated throughout the country.

I rooted around on the website and I'm still confused about what the World's Longest Invoice is...is it a 'real' invoice that you're compiling based on info provided from supporters? Can we see the invoice somewhere? Maybe it's theoretical and I just don't get it!

We haven't launched the Worlds Longest Invoice yet, so it makes sense
you haven't found it online. We were hoping to involve you in its
launch next week.
The World's Longest Invoice will be a website where freelancers can
enter the amount that they've been stiffed, and it will show the
cumulative amount freelancers have lost to nonpayment. Our hope is
that it'll be a tool to galvanize the freelance community around the
issue, and draw the attention of lawmakers who can do something about
it.
We're planning to launch this thing on Tuesday, April 24, and were
hoping that coworking spaces would join us in pushing it out to your
communities to make sure we make the biggest splash possible.

Just an FYI for those anticipating this... got word from Freelancer's
Union that launch of the invoice/site has been delayed until the 26th.
Conversation is already underway on Twitter and will continue until
then. Participate by following #getpaidnotplayed and FU founder

It's a great idea, but I wish the idea had more immediate clarity. I like how it tallies up on a website, but I shouldn't have to go to G+ to learn that the ulterior motive is to take the final number to Albany to help get legislation through. A simple sentence or two on the home page would clear that up tremendously! I'll even write it for you.
