As part of our coworking research, we've developed a draft list of US
coworking facilities. The list (Excel file) can be found at:
http://db.tt/jNpKyiV

As of the end of August, we had found 224 office-based coworking
facilities in the US. We also found 28 shared hacker/maker spaces
that met our coworking criteria.

We included a facility if: (1) the facility self-identifies as
providing coworking space or equivalent; (2) it offers a range of
membership options (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) consistent with
traditional coworking spaces (does not need to provide all); (3) it
offers some form of community space and/or activities (this is
subjective based on our assessment); (4) coworking appears to be a
important part of the facility offering (subjective); (5) the
facility is active; (6) the facility caters, at least in part, to
those using the space for work-related purposes.

As I mentioned in a prior post, this task proved harder - and more
subjective - than we expected. Although this estimate meets our
research needs, the list is likely not complete and there may be
disagreements with facilities we included or excluded.

We would welcome any and all feedback and in particular we are looking
for facilities we may have missed. My email is
sk...@emergentresearch.com or just post here.

The list is not copyrighted. Please keep in mind it is a draft.

Thanks for all the help.

Steve

As always, this is great stuff Steve. Thanks so much for your work and for sharing it here.

Do you plan to continue this draft into non-us territories?

This is great Steve, as soon as I opened the document and sorted
Washington I found two spots I'd never heard of. Thanks for putting
this together.

Alex:

We've started looking at Europe, but haven't yet decided how deep to
go. For now, the rest of the world is not on aour agenda.

This is great work.

Would love to see something similar for Europe and the rest of the world too - this is a global movement!

See, for example, this map of Hubs either up and running or in the pipeline from end of May 2010:

I've been following your blog for a while and your findings are quite
interesting. I'm so glad that someone out there is doing relevant
research on Coworking (and Social Media). I know you're still tweaking
and counting coworking spaces, and I just wanna let ya know that I
noticed the Beahive facilities in Beacon and Kingston, NY were each
counted twice.

Keep up the great work, guys!

Sincerely, Nyah

Nice work. So far i've found around 19 different maps (some not on
google) of "co-working space"... none are complete, and almost all the
google one's suffer from either spam, irregular listing types (i.e no
name, just the location, or just the address but not name, etc..) or
other bugs, as well as 4 lists (with yours being the largest + most
recent).

A couple days ago I wanted to start playing around with HTML5 and
well, decided to finally consolidate everything in a way that people
could add their own co-working space as well as be provided with an
additional section to highlight specifics regarding the location
(similar to the hackerlabs project but also includes the ability to
hide/find the nearest resource for various services I find most folks
at coworking locations look for). Anyhow, to make a long story short
I'm almost done with the project, it's just down to some minor athetic
tweaking but should be up soon (I'll make a post once it is actually
up and running).

If you want i'd love to have a chat with you about some of the
different things I've discovered whe researching not only the project
but how people go about learning, searching, and finding co-working or
even hackerlab type locations and see if you have any additional
insight to add as you've definitely been looking into these areas for
a lot longer than I have.

Ohh and before the inevitable question gets asked: YES THIS IS A 100%
FREE SERVICE. in fact it's not really a service, just I wanted to
create a self-substainable, user managed portal that actually could
grow with the increasing availability of coworking spots (really i was
just messing around with html5 and then got carried away... by the
time i realized that I remembered that I had promised a good friend
(Angel) who runs Cohere out in Fort Collins, CO an article on my co-
working experiences but then never delivered. This is my peace
offering to her as it's something she's attempted but more importantly
is the one who I consistently see being a shining beacon of hope/
inspiration for others in this industry.

So i guess back to you Steve - if you're up for a chat (i'm talking
even just a quicky via instant messenger) just shoot me an email with
contact info + when you're avail.
:)

This all ties in very nicely with the CoworkingDB project we "launched" last week.  The goal is to create a central place for the data (a single point of truth as you will) and to keep the data decoupled from the various user interfaces people can build on top of the data.  We threw up a wiki page to serve as a homepage for our efforts and would love to incorporate the efforts that have come together over the years.  We've already been contacted by the folks behind coworking.de about their implementation.  Interested in helping out?

We're looking forward to helping out however we can as well.  Loosecubes is still very much in alpha stage but we're happy to pitch in however is most useful.  Steve, great work as well on compiling the database.  I can't wait to check it out.

Working on an update for everyone on our status.   We've got good updates and we're hiring developers if anyone is looking for a job (www.loosecubes.tumblr.com).

Looking forward to seeing this come together.  It's so exciting to be part of this movement!

Happy first day of fall everybody,

Campbell
