Hi Araceli,
We have two full-time staffers at NextSpace (me and our COO) as well as three part-timers. We've had a similar experience as the team at IndyHall: two of our part-timers are starting to pick up side gigs from others in the NextSpace community. Our other part-timer is the Vice Mayor of Santa Cruz, proving that you can, indeed, buy your politicians....! :-) I think I'm most proud of the fact that we just hired a recent college graduate (a very talented young woman named Sara) who grew up in Santa Cruz and very much wanted to begin her professional career here. That's not always an easy thing to do because of a lack of "entry level" jobs at "regular companies" in Santa Cruz. Like many of us on this list, we believe that entry level jobs (or any jobs, for that matter) at regular companies are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Bringing Sara onto our team and giving her the chance to flourish within our coworking space is a wonderfully powerful example of what a coworking space can do. More broadly, I think it's a great example of how coworking continues to be on the forefront of some pretty fundamental changes in how people earn a living.
We built employees into our original business model, although it took us over a year to ramp up to our current staff levels. Like many of you, I spent the early days at NextSpace running around like a madman. So I was incredibly grateful to get some help. I think it made good business sense, too. I was able to do more things to grow our space and grow our business, which is beginning to have a pay-off, both in terms of dollars as well as in terms of the strength of the NextSpace community.
Good luck with your expansion! Let me know if we can be helpful with the nuts-n-bolts of hiring more staffers.
Cheers,
Jeremy
