Hey Gang,

After launching the Reworkwc community I found myself in a fascinating quandary. I've been so committed to setting up the space for others to feel welcomed and at ease, helping new members settle in and set up shop but I've been struggling to figure out how to set up my own, permanent deskspace at the very coworking space we opened! I know it's crazy but, I feel this resistance to set up my own shop, and really, how to set up my own shop, and stay there, commit there, and make it my permanent workspace WHILE being the lead community builder and space manager. We're a young community, a growing community, and I love our entire space. But I've been so used to the set up at home, it's been an unexpected challenge.

So, I wondered, anybody else have some war stories? Transitional struggles from those of you who opened a space? Thoughts, suggestions? I'd love to see some pics of the workspaces you've set up for yourself while being in the mix of community.

I've given up my desk many times for others.  Some days, I have to hotdesk it "like everybody else".  Same goes with parking - I'm on the street meter if there are no more spots in our first-come, first-serve parking lot.  Learn to have less.  Stay nimble.

Same here.

When we started I like having a full time desk, but over time I've enjoyed not having a dedicated setup. It depends on the kind of work you do, of course. Some people need a rig, big monitor, their papers/notebooks, etc. in order to be productive. Personally I can work from anywhere that I can plug in my laptop, so I embrace it and the regular change helps me experience the coworking from many different vantage points which has served me well overall!

Ditto. I love being a floater throughout our space. The best part is I get to meet and trade little bits of wisdom with new people everyday. Interacting with all members is huge and being in a new spot everyday will make it easy for that interaction to take place. Plus people don't know where you are so then it becomes a Where's Waldo game all day.

Kindest Regards,

Jenny's point of "wheres waldo" is a good one - it also illustrates the importance of having somebody around who is in a fixed place so that new members, walk-ins, etc know where the person who can help is.

So everything that's been said so far works with the caveat that there's somebody to act as a "host". :)

In our old space our front reception area was separated from the main coworking room. I worked in the back with everyone 90% of the time but segregated myself up front to do tedious tasks like billing or edits to the coworking ebooks which required 400% of my attention.

In our new space, you walk right in to the main coworking room. I had my own office just off the main room but kind of hated it. I've just recently rented out my office to a full time member who is on the phone A LOT and moved my stuff in to the main room. It's all about flexibility. I'm also the first person that gets booted to the couch if the desks fill up :)

Our front desk is the first in the series of desks.  No separation no nothing.  We work "amongst the peeps"
