Hi Julia!

We use Stripe for both recurring subscriptions and one time charges. The nice thing about Stripe is you can set up multiple "Plans" and Stripe will take care of the proper prorating when a member switches between them. When the user is subscribed to a plan, Stripe automatically charges for the full month up front and that day is the basis for the regular payment. I don't know offhand if you can configure it to do otherwise.

The software we use to members and payments is my own creation that allows members to sign up and self-service their account completely online. I'm in the process of cleaning up to be more configurable and usable by other spaces. The whole system has been running for a couple months and we've been really happy with it.

Hope that helps!
Paul
