Hey everybody! I am currently researching what the market for a
coworking space in Charlotte, NC would be like. I am interested on
the catalyst level right now, looking to be a space owner. Any advice
on where to start? It has been really hard to find any info for
Charlotte, so any direction at all would be amazing!

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,
I'm really close to opening a space in Carrboro, NC. Its called
Carrboro Coworking. www.carrrborocoworking.com

The first thing I did was create a online survey. (I used
SurveyGizmo.) Then a BASIC website w/a link to the survey. Then I
created postcards with a interior design vision. Plus I set up a
google group to keep people informed. Finally I went to a lot of local
tech meetups. Had coffee with hundreds of people. While I was taking
with people I asked them to take the online survey. Lots of those
events I sponsored to. Like BarCamp RDU. Oh yeah and I blogged about
coworking and asked my blogger friends to do the same.

To this day the info from the survey guides my priorities. I found out
that there are three things most important to the folks I polled. Fast
internet (WiFi), comfortable working environment, and Coffee. No big
shock there. But good to know. Its my service mantra.

We started a website to promote events in North Carolina. Its called
Social Carolina. www.socialcarolina.org. There have been some
Charlotte events on this google calendar. Also check out http://cltblog.com.
Host events. Promote them. Networking with folks and building
community is key to coworking.

Here are the NC folks I found on the Coworking Wiki. <-- there is A
LOT of good info there about starting a coworking space

http://coworking.pbwiki.com/CoworkingCarrboro
http://coworking.pbwiki.com/CoworkingRaleigh

I've heard discussion of coworking in Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham,
Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Charlotte.

Hi Nathan -
I just started investigating what it would take to open a coworking
space in Greensboro. I have just started working on a survey, as Brian
suggests in his reply, to get an idea of what the potential market
looks like in this area.
I started up a blog that you can reach from the pbwiki link that Brian
mentioned or directly at http://coworkgso.wordpress.com

Not much there right now, but it should grow as I spend more time on
this project.

Good luck and welcome!

//Doug

Hey Doug!

I've checked it out, and been inspired. We now have a blog (with even
less than anything right now) at www.catalyst704.com. We're going to
use that to do surveys and polls and such as well. Keep me updated
on what's going on in Gboro, and if you're ever down this way in
Charlotte, let's get up and chat... Same goes for anyone else coming
through or living in Charlotte. Just to put that out there...
