Hi all!

Jacob and I had the awesome opportunity to go and tour the final productions of a group of design students at one of our local community colleges, who were tasked with designing coworking spaces as their main class project. They took one of three floor plans (one of which was our space here in Capitol Hill Seattle), and redesigned into their idea of an awesome coworking space. Yes, you heard me: an entire class project completely focused on designing a great coworking space.

It was AWESOME.

Dan, the instructor, did a beautiful job of teaching the students what coworking was all about (by starting with the core values of coworking), and then let them run with it. The products were fantastic! It was great to see students' interpretations of what coworking could look like. We're hoping to have the final products hang here at Office Nomads, and I'll post photos of them as soon as I get them!

Just though I'd share - it was quite a surreal experience for both Jacob and I, and even gave us some great ideas for our (still pending) second space.

Happy Thursday, y'all!

Susan

Very cool!

I'm curious, what, specifically, were the core values of coworking communicated to the students?

Any chance of getting the results posted somewhere?  I would love to see their ideas.

Will definitely post pictures if I get them!

As for the values communicated, they started here: http://coworking.com. :)

This is awesomesauce.

We've had an ongoing relationship with the industrial design students and faculty at University of the Arts in Philadelphia and have had similar experiences. It's extremely rewarding to see their interpretations and the process of bringing them together.

We've had a couple of different versions of the relationship, but the ones that went best were, hands down, when the students were motivated themselves to work from Indy Hall for part of the semester. In the other instances, they were "encouraged" to work from Indy Hall, and we found that it was fundamentally flawed in the fact that it wasn't their "choice". Everyone who works from Indy Hall does so by their own volition, both on as a participating member as well as on a daily basis. We found that if we can avoid it, that part of the experience shouldn't change, even in these more "institutional" relationships.
