Looks like
The Hub LA has finally opened its doors. Congrats to Elizabeth and Nick, if you're here. I know how long and hard you've been working on this.
From the photos in this FastCo piece, the space looks gorgeous - very reminiscent of The Hub Stockholm,
which I visited in August. I look forward to visiting in person
someday.
I've always been a little puzzled by the choice some Hubs (including LA) have made to eschew the term "coworking" in their
marketing, instead describing themselves as "...an in-person membership community of impact professionals
dedicated to making positive change in the world. Anchored by a
physical space in the Arts District in Downtown LA, members come to
collaborate, access market opportunities and capital, build community,
and scale ideas. We borrowed from the best of a member's club, business
incubator, idea lab, and the comforts of home to create a new kind of
gathering place. A habitat for innovators."
I prefer The HUB Seattle's
approach - tagline: "coworking for the common good" - embracing the term, and the larger coworking movement/sector,
while differentiating itself enough to communicate the social mission filter members need
to pass through to join. I'm curious, do the Hubs or similar spaces like Toronto's
Centre for Social Innovation even count as coworking spaces according to
DeskMag and others tracking the sector's growth?
What do others think?
A Co-Working Space For People Who Give A Damn Explodes In Los Angeles
The co-working network The Hub’s
L.A. outpost just opened, but it’s already taking off. The model: Less
leased office space than collaborative space for people with shared
values.
