As far as I know, nobody is currently working on it. There are some
ideas about it, but nothing is set in stone.
1) They need to be higher resolution
2) They need to be scalable, either one big version that scales down
to smaller versions or multiple scale-levels.
Furthermore, I'm no copyright expert but all artwork might need to be
a bit different from the original, just to avoid issues.
But maybe somebody has an idea about that?

OpenTTD has a 32bit project that is creating images at double the resolution with a higher colour depth. It looks like they might be making hires images and then shrinking them down for the normal zoom levels, but I wonder if that is really necessary.
