Dear Neighbours,

The original, and historic name of Corktown is The King's Park dating from 1793.   The Historical Board advised us about this in the 1980's when we first thought about the name.  We were able to have historic street signs made by a donation from a film company, private donors such as myself, which were installed in the neighbourhood.  Then a grant was made available and the Corktown street signs replaced those of the historic name.  Besides the two suppositions offered in the mural application about the name, there was also a Mr. Cork who lived on King Street and was supposed to have created what is now called Loblaws.

In the historic post office on Adelaide Street, in the back room, there is a relief of the city up to Parliament Street, east of which is The King's Park, a swampy area left for development at a later time.  This is where the name of "Regent Park" comes from.

I thought this might be of interest to newer residents of Corktown.    Ann
