Can anybody tell me why Shuter St. is being used for 501 TTC Buses and for how long? The construction dirt is blowing around more than usual because of this and we have enough traffic problems already on the street.

The City decided to do work on the water mains and sidewalks further east on Queen street (east of Leslie st.) Therefore buses are turning around along Shuter- I guess since streetcars are limited on the runs, resulting in more buses being used. This part of the work will be going on until the end of July. Another phase will be going on until October, though that hasnt been defined as of yet.

Thanks for the info. This is very frustrating for the residents, again we are left in the dark when it comes to traffic and noise impact on a street that has a No Heavy Truck By-law from 7 pm - 7 am. It's seems useless to have resident association's when they aren't informed about about such issues. Some of these buses are exceeding the speed limit later in the night.
Why are these buses not running along King St. and Queen? They could be picking up fares on Queen and taking them east or west. I work shift work and leave for work very early in the morning and come
home late at night. These streets are dangerous at these times of morning and night and to have to walk blocks out of one's way is not only frightening but dangerous.
The other night I had to turn down a shift the other night because I couldn't afford the cab fare in case there was not service available in the area. Sunday I had to walk to work, which takes 55 minutes because service was being re-routed for the run. A couple of weeks before I was waiting at Sumach and King for a streetcar for 30 minutes. The sign at the stop said nothing about there being no streetcar or bus service at these stops. When I called the hotline they told me that I would have to walk because the TTC was not stopping there, luckily I was able to get a streetcar on Parliament while walking and trying to catch a cab. I would rather be late for work rather than be out an hour's pay because I had to take a cab.

I guess the Regent Park Construction Liaison Committee doesn't mean anything
- if it weren't for me personally, representing the CRBA, it wouldn't exist.
Nor apparently does our having Beth Baskin, a Shuter Street resident, as the
CRBA representative on that committee mean anything.
I personally followed up with Pam McConnell's office after the first meeting
to push some action on the street cleaning, as you know, although I haven't
heard anything subsequently from anyone on Shuter, positive or negative.
But you attended the Committee as I did, and are as able to follow up as me.
I can only assume that positive action resulted.
So I'm disappointed that you would broadcast this lack of thanks, for the
effort that was made for the sole benefit of Shuter Street residents, in
such a broad forum which necessitates this broad response which normally I
don't do. You just got too personal.
I wish the Trefann Association well in getting local issues addressed. And
we will continue to do what we do which mostly is well appreciated.

if more of our neighbours got involved in the Trefann Association, we might

My question is "Doesn't Councillor McConnell let Corktown know about any
traffic disruptions?" I would think the TTC should be obligated to let
the local councillor know about such disruptions to their neighbourhoods. As you can see there is no mention about Shuter St. on this site. It's too bad the Queen cars aren't as frequent as these buses. They seem to be less than 5 minutes apart. Perhaps we should consider getting rid of the streetcars in Toronto and replacing them with buses.
I bet if these buses were running through Cabbagetown it would be stopped in a hurry. Oh well so much for living in the ghetto......
502 Downtowner - Watermain work and track repairs
Streetcars replaced by buses east of Greenwood
Avenue. Effective May 6 until October 2012.
Starting Sunday, May 6 until the end of July, streetcars will be replaced by
buses, on Queen Street East,
east of Greenwood Avenue,
during watermain work and streetcar track repairs between Vancouver
Avenue and Coxwell Avenue.
During the first of two phases of repair work, 501/301 QUEEN streetcars will
turn back west at Russell Carhouse (Greenwood Avenue).
501 QUEEN replacement buses will provide service on Queen
Street East between Broadview
Avenue and Neville Park Loop and the 301 QUEEN
all-night buses between University Avenue
and Neville Park Loop, diverting in both directions via Queen
Street, Leslie Street,
Eastern Avenue, Coxwell
Avenue and Queen Street.
Route 502 DOWNTOWNER and 503 KINGSTON RD streetcars will be replaced by route
502/503 buses, running between Queen & Broadview intersection and Bingham
Loop, diverting via Queen Street, Leslie Street, Eastern Avenue, Coxwell
Avenue, Queen Street and Kingston Road.
During the project, there will be no service on route 503 looping downtown
via King Street, Church
Street, Wellington Street, York
Street and King Street
and no service on route 502 into McCaul Loop.
The second phase of repair work is scheduled to take place from the
beginning of August until October 6,
2012, requiring further routing changes.

Hi Linda. There’s nothing noted in the route diversions – you can always check on this web page - http://www.ttc.ca/Service_Advisories/Route_diversions/index.jsp - and there is also a link to “Service Alerts” which doesn’t show anything affecting the 501 in this area either. Other than that, contact them at the appropriate connections shown on this page - http://www.ttc.ca/Contact_Us/index.jsp . Cheers, L Larry WebbLaurence J. calm down, it's not a criticism of you personally, just my observation how our local residents associations have worked during the past several years. I have been a local resident for 28 years and have been involved with the residents associations throughout that time period.
Shuter St resident Claudio was the person who first established dialog between TCHC and the neighbourhood, about Regent Park redevelopment: a meeting March 17, 2011 as communicated on the Trefann website.
No significant improvement in dust/dirt levels on Shuter St (but I assume that Beth has already told you that).

Thanks for the info. This is very frustrating for the residents, again we are left in the dark when it comes to traffic and noise impact on a street that has a No Heavy Truck By-law from 7 pm - 7 am. It's seems useless to have resident association's when they aren't informed about about such issues. Some of these buses are exceeding the speed limit later in the night.
...
I've double checked the information I have and the 501/502/503 replacement
buses should be looping via River, Dundas, and Carroll Streets. The purpose
of these buses are to provide replacement service on Queen Street between
the east end and Broadview Avenue, resulting from TTC and City work on
Queen east of Greenwood.
I'll try to find out why the buses are not looping along that route
specified -- if I recall correctly, there's quite a bit of construction on
Carroll Street right now related to the construction of the new park there,
which may necessitate buses going further west for a suitable looping route
to go back east (Parliament, Shuter, River has been a traditional route for
Queen Streetcar replacement buses). The problem is if this isn't in the
schedule, this is a longer route, so buses have less time to go further
(and may explain the reports of excessive speed).
*Linda: *I'm not sure if you're aware, but the TTC has *real-time
information for all its buses and streetcars* to tell you exactly when the
next one is coming. You should check it out:
http://www.nextbus.com/predictor/stopSelector.jsp?a=ttc There was also plenty of information in the media and Larry had posted
information here on the Corktown group about the street/TTC closures
relating to the marathon on Sunday. It shouldn't have been a big surprise,
given all the signage, the media stories and warnings, and information on
TTC's website. But that's quite the story you tell about your trip to work
that beautiful, sunny Sunday.
Also, for your comment about replacing streetcars and buses - there's 21
buses to replace 12 streetcars on Queen Street right now, since buses carry
fewer people than streetcars and you need more buses to carry the same
number of people. If buses are such a negative impact, imagine the impact
of 55 or so buses to replace the 31 streetcars that are scheduled on Queen
in the morning rush hour on traffic, noise, and pollution? Or does it only
matter when it runs in front of your house? Not to mention the added cost
of running bus service -- 55 drivers versus 31 drivers; 55 buses to fuel
instead of 31 electric streetcars.

That March 27, 2011 meeting was actually initiated by me, except TCHC messed
up their communications and didn't include us on the e-mail cc. But that is
now almost part of history, which is exactly that and so increasingly
irrelevant. Your comments were about the present.
Since you are on the Construction Liaison Committee, I assume you have made
the current dust/dirt levels known to the Committee, TCHC and the City.

I've been told by the TTC that the planned routing was
River-Dundas-Carroll, but there's construction on Carroll Street that has
required the looping be pushed to Parliament via Parliament-Shuter-River.
I've requested that they review the scheduled time so buses don't have to
rush to stay on schedule and to consider using King-River-Queen as soon as
that intersection reopens in the near future.

You may not realize that some of the residents do not have, nor can they afford the toys to find out this information. I have a pay as you go cell phone that I only use for police emergency calls and work for my shift schedule. I pay $10 a month which does not have free minutes or cheaper times to phone, therefore I do not have access to the internet when at a TTC Stop. I did use the information phone number posted on the King St. post that morning and was put on hold while they found the info. That took about 5 minutes and minutes on my phone and I told them the information posted was wrong. That's when she told me I'd have to walk.
As for TTC traffic on Queen and King, I was under the impression that access to TTC increased your property value, Hot Properties always uses this for selling features. Shuter St. is not a TTC Route.

Hi everybody,
I've double checked the information I have and the 501/502/503 replacement buses should be looping via River, Dundas, and Carroll Streets. The purpose of these buses are to provide replacement service on Queen Street between the east end and Broadview Avenue, resulting from TTC and City work on Queen east of Greenwood.
I'll try to find out why the buses are not looping along that route specified -- if I recall correctly, there's quite a bit of construction on Carroll Street right now related to the construction of the new park there, which may necessitate buses going further west for a suitable looping route to go back east (Parliament, Shuter, River has been a traditional route for Queen Streetcar replacement buses). The problem is if this isn't in the schedule, this is a longer route, so buses have less time to go further (and may explain the reports of excessive speed).
Linda: I'm not sure if you're aware, but the TTC has real-time information for all its buses and streetcars to tell you exactly when the next one is coming. You should check it out: http://www.nextbus.com/predictor/stopSelector.jsp?a=ttc There was also plenty of information in the media and Larry had posted information here on the Corktown group about the street/TTC closures relating to the marathon on Sunday. It shouldn't have been a big surprise, given all the signage, the media stories and warnings, and information on TTC's website. But that's quite the story you tell about your trip to work that beautiful, sunny Sunday.
Also, for your comment about replacing streetcars and buses - there's 21 buses to replace 12 streetcars on Queen Street right now, since buses carry fewer people than streetcars and you need more buses to carry the same number of people. If buses are such a negative impact, imagine the impact of 55 or so buses to replace the 31 streetcars that are scheduled on Queen in the morning rush hour on traffic, noise, and pollution? Or does it only matter when it runs in front of your house? Not to mention the added cost of running bus service -- 55 drivers versus 31 drivers; 55 buses to fuel instead of 31 electric streetcars.

Another phase will be going on until October, though that hasnt been defined as of yet.
Can anybody tell me why Shuter St. is being used for 501 TTC Buses and for how long? The construction dirt is blowing around more than usual because of this and we have enough traffic problems already on the street.
Thanks,

As usual, the city plans things and doesn't look at the big picture. How long is this genius planning supposed to go on?

I've been told by the TTC that the planned routing was River-Dundas-Carroll, but there's construction on Carroll Street that has required the looping be pushed to Parliament via Parliament-Shuter-River.
I've requested that they review the scheduled time so buses don't have to rush to stay on schedule and to consider using King-River-Queen as soon as that intersection reopens in the near future.

I've made the suggestion to the TTC and we'll see where it goes. You're welcome, by the way, for taking time out of my day to look up your concerns, find out the cause, and propose solutions.
When I'm leaving from home, I check the Nextbus website on my computer before I step out the door. I assume, since you're able to contribute so passionately to this mailing list, that you have the internet access to do the same in the future. It'll save you time waiting and not knowing!

Sorry, thank you for taking the time but this is typical of the city planning process. No concern to the residents.
As for going to the website before work, I am not in the mood to turn on a computer at 5 am to check for updates, that being said on Sunday I did go to the TTC Webpage and it was very vague as to what the Marathon routes and times were. I was starting work later than usual and decided to walk at that point because the subway doesn't open until 9 am on Sunday which would be another delay. When I spoke to a police officer on my way he suggested walking was the best way to go and to stay on the south side of Front.
