More WP8L problems

After finally getting WP up and running, it's not running too smoothly.
Here are the problems so far:

1 The wheel mouse doesn't work even though I've put imwheel -k in
/usr/bin/xwp.

2 Pressing shift-control-F3 does not show me reveal codes.

3 Going into Preferences > Display in the small window with the WP logo
aborts the entire program.

4 Special characters don't show up on the screen or the printed page.

I'm starting to think there are major glitches. I have 8.1 that I took
from a Corel Linux OS CD and run PCLinuxOS.

Any suggestions are more than welcome.
