Hi,

Can OPAL access information from a serial port. Anyone doing this? I have
several pieces of lab equipment that I want to have the data go straight
into a form and the database for reporting.

This is regular ASCII output at 8N1 8,600 through an RS232 cable.

Will it automatically parse the data steam for different fields?

Thanks

Arvel

Arvel,

Please search the groups on serial port. There have been
numerous discussions on the issue, at least one of which includes
a library to download...

Liz

How much control do you need? I'm using the Sax comm ActiveX OCX control to
talk to a couple of machines, scales, barode scanners, etc. It's working
really well and gives you pretty much complete control of the serial port.
You can set it up to fire an event whenever data comes in the serial port
or several other configurations, then you read a property to get the data.
You'll have to parse it yourself, though.

Liz,

Thanks. I've have Programmed in PAL since V 3.0. Need to build a new
application. Seem that the data needs to go on that new internet thingie.

Liz,

Ran several searches. Both on the current and old news domain. No luck.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Arvel,

Here are the headers for several threads.

Neil Thomas of D. Lawton Assoc. has some experience with this.
He is a Paradox fan and may be willing to communicate briefly on
serial port access. Ask him about his presentation last year
titled 'Bringing Paradox Out of Its Shell'.

You can see his bio at 'http://www.dlawton.com/staffnat.htm' and
email him at 'mailto:nth...@dlawton.com'.

Liz,

Thanks. How did you find these? I searched with serial and got nothing!!!.

Oh, I meant to say "HAVE NOT" programmed in PAL since V 3.0. Those of you
who can think in Object oriented programming are much smarter than I.

Arvel,

I download the groups in Netscape to my hard drive. I simply did
a search for messages with "serial port" or "com port" in the
message body. Since you don't have the groups on your hard drive
(probably <g>), if you didn't try google.com, I suggest you go to
their advanced groups search page and use that (put *paradox* in
the Newsgroup field and your criteria in the proper field above).
