Hi all. I was wondering if the 6.1.0 build 69 patch was the latest one for
the mac. I'm still having a problem with the program freezing up after about
10 minuites of painting. It usually (but not always) happens when I do
several quick short brushstrokes. I get the idea that I am overloading the
input buffer. It also happens when I'm painting slowly. This also happens
with oil pastels but not things like colored pencils or charcoal. I am using
Wacom's latest driver: 4.7.0-6. I am on a Blue and White PowerMac G3 with
Mac OS 9.2.1. I have dedicated over 200 megabytes of memory to this app out
of 704 meg of available memory. I have no other apps running and am running
under minimum extensions. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have an answer, but the amount of memory you dedicate to Painter
also depends on the size and resolution of the images you're making. Does
this happen at even small sizes/resolutions?

Frank,

How often do you check your Pre-built Brush File? If it gets too large
it can slow down Painter or even crash it. (Speaking from a lot of
experience.) I learned to check it each time I closed Painter and delete
it if it was even over two or three MB. Since it can grow so fast, there
wasn't much point in keeping it unless it was under 1 MB. Also, if I
worked in Painter for very long, I'd shut it down just to check the PBF,
then open it up again and proceed with some reassurance that things
would go well for a good while.

Another old standby question.. did you follow the recommended procedure
exactly when installing the 6.1 patch? If you're not sure, here are the
steps that seem to work for everyone.. and are the ones Tanya Staples
told me were correct (I added the steps to save a backup set of default
Painter 6 files).

To Uninstall Painter 6, reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch, and
create a backup copy of the Painter 6 default files:

1. Move any files you created to a folder outside of the main Painter
folders.

2. Uninstall Painter 6.

3. Manually delete any remaining Painter 6 installed folders and files.

4. Reboot.

5. Install Painter 6, then immediately install the Painter 6.1 patch.

6. Reboot.

7. Before launching Painter even one time, create a new folder outside
of the Painter 6 folders and name it something like "Painter 6 Default
Files Backup".

8. Go to the main Painter 6 folder and copy all of the default Painter 6
files.

9. Go to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder and paste the
copied default Painter 6 files into it.

Now you have a backup set of Painter 6 default files so when one of them
becomes corrupted, which happens on occasion, **with Painter closed** go
to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder, make a copy of the
appropriate file, then go to the main Painter 6 folder and paste the
copied file into it. This will save your having to Uninstall and
reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch again if a file becomes
corrupted... and save frustration, too!

Have fun! :o)

Apparently it is a mac, or more specifically, am ATI video card problem. I
have no problem with the monitor set at "thousands of colors". This is a
known problem with the ATI rage 128. There was a patch for it that worked
until I got some demanding software like Painter. About the pre-built brush
file, does it grow because you are making brushes as you work or is it
bleeding memory?

Frank,

The Pre-built Brush File is used to store brush building information.
Depending on the brushes you've been using, it can grow quite quickly.
It does use memory and if you're having problems, deleting it may help.

To see how it works, check its file size each time you close Painter and
try to recall what brushes you were using in the last Painter session.
If you delete it, Painter will regenerate this file the next time
Painter is opened.
