Can I install Painter 7 and 8 on the same OS?
I am going to move to version 8 but I need some time to be familiar with the
new interface.

Yes.

Yes you can install both, but you should do a custom install and put one
of them in a folder of it's own. IE; c:\painter8, rather than both in
the Program Files folder.

Ed and 4tonMantis,
When Painter 8 installs, It creates it's own folder. On XP it looks
something like this;
C:\Program files\Corel\Painter 8. Painter 8 is its own folder. There is no
need to do a custom install. It's done for you on the default settings.

You see where it says (Program Files), any program that you install on a
WINDOZ system will install as default to the Program Files. If you do a
custom install, you can keep one version out of Program Files and make
life easier when it comes time to hack or uninstall one of the versions.
I've been doing computer repair and consulting for a looong time, keep
them as separate as possible, Windows is not what Bill Gates wants you
to think it is. Experience is the best teacher.

It's just as easy to rename the folder into which a program is installed Painter
8, for example, rather than just Painter. So you could have folders in Program
Files for, e.g., Painter 6, Painter 7, and Painter 8.

Very true Craig, but remember, Windoz looks at the Program Files first
and if there is any problem with a version, Windoz will compound it.
Program Files is like a rubbish barrel. Put it in and it will be dumped
sooner or later. If you install in seperate folders, Windows is forced
to look in that specific folder for commands to start and run a specific
program. You also gain the avantage of narrowing down problems within
that folder. Program Files resemble Walmart Superstore. Look around
enough and you'll find it. I prefer the corner store.

Ed,
I have enough problems with Microsoft, but the problems that you are
bringing up aren't among them. I don't want to start any kind of rant, but
I strongly disagree with you. I've never had one version of Painter
conflict with another, and this goes way back to the early 90's with the
early versions of Painter and of Windows. Right now I have 3 versions of
Painter on my computer, and nary a conflict. This is the case since I first
started using Painter. The same can be said for Adobe products, I now have
the CS Pro suite installed, also Illustrator 10 and Adobe Photoshop 6 and 7.
No problems ever.
Some people are for or against Microsoft or Apple as a religious experience.
I'm not pro or con either way. I just use what will do the job. With as
little problems as possible.
I'm sure Windows isn't perfect, but it is pretty damned good. I'm sure Mac
isn't perfect, but again, it's pretty damned good. I started out with a pc
because of price, which is still a bit better than the Mac platform. But I
wouldn't have a problem going to Mac if ever the need arose.

Ed,

Not to quarrel with an expert, ;)

I have the following Painter versions all installed in my WinXP Home SP1
system in the C:\Program Files folder (each in its own folder to which
the installation defaults):

Painter 5.0.3

Metacreations Painter Classic 1

Painter 6.1

procreate Painter Classic 2

Painter 7.1.357

Painter 8.1

Painter 9 Beta version

All run on my system with no more than the usual problems we experience
with Painter.

All have been Uninstalled and reinstalled without problems (unless I did
something wrong which has happened at least once even though I know how
to do it and have done it successfully many times).

To others reading this thread:

Before messing with where Painter is installed, I'd suggest contacting
Corel to find out if it could at any point cause problems.

Craig,

The default installation location for Painter 8 is (already):

Corel > Corel Painter 8

For Painter 7: Painter 7

For Painter 6: Metacreations > Painter 6

For Painter 5: Painter 5.0

For Metacreations Painter Classic 1: Painter Classic

For procreate Painter Classic 2: procreate Painter Classic

Each is automatically installed in its own, unique, folder.

So you already have it!
How can I get it too (I haven't seen it on Corel's website)?
Many thanks!

Ed -

To each his own. I'm personally more suspicious of programs that want to run OUTSIDE
of the Program Files folder. In any case, whether a program is in the Program Files
folder or not has nothing to do, as far as I know, with where windows looks for start
and run commands.

Craig

Jane,

Notice I said "Painter 9 Beta version".

Anyone working on the Painter 9 Beta team has the Painter 9 Beta
software to test.

Painter 9 has not been released yet.

In article <2q96abF...@uni-berlin.de>,

Don't be silly, we have that too. Sense of Humor 0.9 beta 4, build 157
was handed off to our QA department for testing, but the biggest
problems we are having are due to Localization. It turns out that using
SoH 0.9 varies from language to language, and QA testing has pointed out
that its usability varies from person to person.

Seriously (ha!), we simply want to avoid anyone not seeing the winky
smiley and telling themselves, their friends, whoever... that "Corel is
shipping Beta products". Which is simply not true.

Remember the saying: "It must be true, I saw it on the Internet!"...

Imaging Dev,

Humor is just as variable on human systems as Painter is on computer
systems.

Isn't it?

Yes, it is!

We do pretty well, though, considering the motley crew we have on the
Beta team and around the Painter community.

Yay Team! :o)

Mike
I can confirm that Sense of Humor 1.0 is out of beta and widely available. I
used it recently on another thread titled "re:Painter 9". Check out my
responses there. (no bugs to report, but it takes a little getting used to.)
