Help.
I'm a newbie running Painter 7 on Windows XP. A problem that I'm
encountering is that sometimes, actually most of the time, when I draw a
vector shape or a line and go to "commit" or "drop" it , I end up a
bizarre one-pixel outline of the path. What make this a real puzzler is
that once in a while shapes rasterize correctly.

It sounds like you have stroke selected. To deselect, when you draw a shape,
press enter. You get the Shapes attributes dialog box. Deselect stroke,
click OK. Now when you drop you should have a shape that's outline-free.

Let me know if this helps.

Karen,
Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think I adequately described the problem
I'm having.
At http://www.metro.quik.com/rclarke/path.html I've put a screen capture
of the rasterization that's occurring when I commit a 10 pixel wide stroke.
Instead of getting a nice solid line as I would expect, I get an outline.

I just tried dropping a stroked vector and I don't see what you're getting.
My line drops as a solid black shape. I've tried different settings and
still get the solid line after dropping. I'm running version 7 with the
latest patch on a Windows 2000 machine.

Hi,

You need to make sure the Shape's Stroke and Fill are set the way you
want them and, if you want a Stroke, its Width is set properly.

Use Shapes > Set Shape Attributes to make these adjustments.

I get a better quality result when I first use Shapes > Convert to
Selection. While the Selection is active, I create a New Layer. If I
want the edges softer, I use Select > Feather (1 pixel). Then I use
Effects > Fill to fill the selection with color. Now the filled "shape"
is on a transparent Layer and it can be repositioned however I want.

If you want your Shape to have two colors (one for Fill and one for
Stroke), make a duplicate Shape and make one with only Fill and the
other with only Stroke, then treat them as described above.

Depending on the image size and resolution, you may or may not need to
Feather the selection, especially if the Shape has only vertical and
horizontal edges.

Hope this helps, and Happy Holidays!

Hi,

I can't reproduce your problem by first drawing a curve with the Pen
tool, then using either:

Layers section menu > Convert to Default Layer

or..

Shapes menu > Convert to Layer

Is this how you did it? If not, can you explain the steps you used?

Also, after making sure you have a blank Canvas, use Layers section menu
> Drop and Select. Then click inside the selection to lift it to a Layer. Then, after lifting the selection to a Layer, you'll need to highlight the Canvas (Select > All) and use Edit > Clear to remove the edge pixel residue left after lifting the selection to a Layer (which is what your screen print looks like, by the way... edge pixel residue left on the Canvas).

Have you installed the Painter 7 Update? If not, that might help. Use
the following steps to avoid problems:

1. Move any files you created that are inside the Painter 7 folders to a
backup folder outside of the Painter 7 folders.

2. Uninstall Painter 7.

3. Manually delete any remaining files and folders.

4. Reboot.

5. Install Painter 7 and don't open it even one time.

6. Install the Painter 7 Update.

7. Reboot.

8. Open Painter 7.

Here's a complete list of direct URLs for all of the files in the
Painter 7 Update package:

Thanks again for your help. I reinstalled painter with the patch. , and
made sure version was the most current 7.1.357
I'll keep my fingers crossed that this pesky intermittent problem doesn't
spring up.

i know what you are talking about. i had originally posted this as a bug
during the Painter 7 beta test. there is a rendering flaw in the vector
shapes in P7 that produces a thin border of black and whitish artifacts
around the outside edge of objects once rastered or converted to layer.
this also applies to text. this just happened to me the other day while
i was working in P7 on some image and text concepts. after i had
finalized the composition i did a save to jpeg and when i reopen the
file all the text had rastered with the black artifacts stroking all of
the text. the only fix for this is to open the files in Painter 6 and
raster vector shapes there. this is what i have to do sometimes.
hopefully this will be fixed in version 8

by the way, is Painter 8 beta being shipped yet? i'm supposedly on the
list but have yet to receive it. gotta christmas email from Corel about
it but nothing was said about it being shipped....

Wow. Is this happening on only some platforms? I'm running Painter 7 on
Windows XP
This bug makes big chunks of Painter useless.

i work on Mac Os 9. from what i've determined it looks to be a problem with Painter 7 itself. what i find interesting is that you are one of the few people i've seen that posted this problem. this is possibly due to the fact that sometimes the artifacts do not always happen. but for the most part it is a regular occurrence for me.

ghi,

It's never happened to me (Painter 7.1.357 Win98 SE) and I use Painter 7
daily, and frequently work with Shapes. In fact, this thread is the
first in which I've seen this peculiar and unpleasant problem mentioned.

Have you written to Corel Painter Program Manager Tanya Staples to tell
her about it? If not, I'm sure she'd appreciate knowing. Her address, in
case you don't recall it, is:

tan...@corel.com

Happy New Year, everyone! :o)

this issue was brought up long ago when P7 first came out. i put together a comprehensive report to corel at that time that also included images showing the problem. Tanya replied back that it was being looked into ( there were other problems including the 72 dpi printing output default) but once the 7.1 patch came out the shape/text artifacts still remained. this is going to be the first thing i checkout in Painter 8.
