Lost serial number

[John Charles Meyers]

Something I thought I would never be typing, but I have lost my serial
number to Painter 7. Procreate's very pretty little web site has no mention
of what I can do. Does anyone else have any idea how I would go about
getting it? Have shipping invoice from Outpost.com, CDs, manual, and serial
numbers from MAC v.4 - v.6., and a screen cap of the "About Painter 7"

I did, by virtue of asking for the info I wanted, and was recommended to
the webpage. When I explained that the webpage was slow and hard to
look at, the girl politely told me that I ought to email the webmaster.
I haven't bothered. The point of the personal touch, a personal phone
call is apparently lost on Corel.

It sure looks like some newbie pestered the boss to buy him Flash, and
then had to work like mad to justify the purchase. Wildstorm's website
(comic book company, www.wildstorm.com) is, dare I say it, even worse-
their pokey server allows you to actually bake a cake while waiting for
pages to load, no mere cup of coffee.

I do my part by warning people away from the website and providing the
crucial info myself. By the way, here it is, simply reposted:

If you like Flash, and/or have the time to wait for these things to
load, you can see some pretty nifty previews and examples of brush
strokes and new text features on Procreate's website. You're in for a
real treat of eyestrain, too, as the crucial details (system
compatibility, file formats, FAQS, etc) are squeezed out via eyedropper
one tiny bit at a time....as light gray text on white. This is a far
cry from Metacreations one-page wonder for Painter 6, still available to
those who are interested:

Unfortunately, if you just want the down-and-dirty details and critical
info without the Flash and eyestrain, you're in for a snotty message
soon after you type in www.procreate.com.

For those few of us who prefer readable information shown right
up-front, I've summarized some of the key features and basic information
from Procreate's Painter 7 web pages, and from the User Guide:

System compatibility

Mac:
Mac OS 8.6 or later, PowerMac G3 or higher
Minimum 64 MB RAM (or 128 MB if using OS X)
24-bit 800x600 color display (or 1024x768 if using OS X)
Mouse or tablet

Windows:
Win 98, Win2000, WinNT 4.0, or Win Me
Pentium 200 or higher
Minimum 64 MB RAM
24-bit 800x600 color display
2X CD-ROM drive
Mouse or tablet

File Import and Export with Painter 7:
RIFF, TIFF (CMYK or RGB, but not LZW compressed), PICT,
PSD (CMYK or RGB), BMP, PCX, Targa, GIF, JPEG, EPS, AI (acquire/export).

On Mac, Painter 7 cannot acquire with TWAIN; the device must acquire via
a Photoshop-compatible plug-in.

Also, I've collected some URLs below for some important support issues.
If you go to kb.corel.com and click on the appropriate link for your OS
(Mac or Win), interestingly enough, there are no links for Painter 7.
This might lead you to believe that there are no support issues -- or
simply no support. Instead, do a search for Painter 7 with your OS.
(i. e. Painter 7 macintosh) THEN you'll find quite a few links...for
Painter 7, Painter 5, Dabbler, KPT, etc. all mixed together, along with
links for other operating systems. Advanced search helps, but it isn't
great.
There's a sort of workaround, though:

Dude...thanks for all the hard work on your post...very helpful...It amazes
me that certain business models still can support arrogance towards their
POTENTIAL customer base.

I am not a Painter user yet (I recently bought the Wacom beginners tablet
which Painter Classic comes bundled)...and, I was forewarned at a trade
convention last year that Corel's acquisition would be the sign of a great
product being horrifically managed and potentially left to starve in some
CEO's office.

Revolt I say and have Adobe manage this product! 8^D

You claim not to have Painter; you claim to have Painter
Classic but not using it; and you claim that your sister's

stupid idiot, I agree with you. I've often opened up Painter and wished that
Adobe would take it over and give it a serious makeover, and do something
about those palettes all over the place. The interface has been a real
stumbling block in my experience of learning Painter.

Also, I think it would then become more of a mainstream product too. More
books, tutorials and so on.

Painter is definitely a minority interest. Most graphic designers I know
don't use it.

Painter has real potential though, and if more designers used it, they could
really do some good work

You... can do something about those palettes all over the place. I
recently taught a class on managing the Painter interface and designing
your own work space. If you've been suffering.. you suffer needlessly
since there are solutions available.

There are tons of tutorials available for Painter.. all versions.. and
lots of Painter lists, newsgroups, message boards, and forums. For
instance, try the one listed below my signature and also check my site
for tutorials in many of the sections.

I think Painter has tried to do too much. It's just a matter of time before
an enterprising software company makes a good plug-in that concentrates on
'natural media' alone, and that will be that.

The Painter die-hards can be left to make the best of it.

There is a plug in called Deep Paint.

I haven't used it, but I've seen it referred to in magazines such as the
Computer Arts Photoshop Special editions, and the Photoshop Wow Book too.

All you have to do is to go to the Right Hemisphere website and you will
realize that the Deep Paint brushes are far behind the Painter brushes.

One could of course imagine a powerful Photoshop plugin - but then again
there are not only brushes in Painter - some of the other interesting
features are
the possibility of creating your own nozzles, patterns etc. - and quite
easily too.

I wouldn't go that far... 8-) The product is truly wondrous! And the
people who are involved in taking Painter 7 orders and getting your
purchase sent out to you are very responsive! However, I think that
like many companies, the website gets farmed out to someone who feels
that glitz is more important than speed and utility, and there is
considerable inertia involved once the website is completed. It ought
to be a work in progress, but instead, it becomes "the done deal."
