Hi
I have a brand new full version of Painter 8 (with the 8.1 patch) and
although I have followed all the directions in the manual (and in the
"Painter 8 Wow" book), I can't get AutoClone, or Auto Van Gogh to work.
They are always greyed out, no matter how many different ways I try to
do this. Is there something I'm missing or is anyone else having this
problem?

Thanks,
Shiny

Shiny,

Try restoring all brush variants in the currently loaded brush library
to their default state:

Brush Selector menu > Restore All Default Variants, then click the OK
button.

Thanks, tried that. I can still only get some of the brushes to
autoclone. For instance in the 'Cloner' brushes, the 'chalk' cloner
brush will autoclone, but the 'camel oil' cloner brush does not. In the
'Artists' brushes, all of them autoclone except the 'tubism' brush. In
the 'Oil' brushes, only about half will autoclone.
Is this normal? If only some of the brushes work with autoclone, is
there like, a list of which ones work so I don't have to keep guessing
and scrolling thru all the variants?

Hi Shiny,

It's "normal" for some brush variants **not to** work with Auto Clone or
Ctrl/Command+Shift+Z. This was true in earlier Painter versions as well.

I haven't seen a list of brush variants that **do not work** with these
commands.

You don't need to guess at all.

The best way to find out if brush variants work with these commands is
to test them and make a list you can refer to later.

In WinXP Home using Painter 8.1 (patch installed), I tested the two
brush categories you mentioned. Here's a list of variants that **did not
work** with Auto Clone:

____________________
Chalk Brush Category

All Default Variants **do not work** with Effects > Esoterica > Auto Clone.

______________________
Artists Brush Category

Impressionist
Sargent Brush
Seurat
Tubism
Van Gogh

In the Chalk brush category, all brush variants **do work** with
Ctrl/Command+Shift+Z.

In the Artists brush category, all brush variants except Tubism **do
work** with Ctrl/Command+Shift+Z.
