24-bit color refers to the total number of bits used to represent each pixel
on the screen. A pixel is composed of Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) components.
24/3 = 8 bits for each component. When talking about TIFF files in this
context the the 8 or the 16 referes to to how many bits are used for *each*
component. So an 8-bit TIFF is 24-bit color (8*3) and a 16-bit TIFF is 4
8-bit color (16*3).

Right, because they are 48-bit color images. -- Russ
