I just installed Painter IX and tried to open some photos in TIFF format
that my camera raw converter and Adobe Photoshop call 16-bit. I receive a
message in Painter that "TIFF File Has An Unsupported Number of Bits Per
Sample." If I search the Help file in Painter it says that it supports
24-bit color. If I convert the file to an 8-bit TIFF in either my camera
raw converter or in Photoshop, the file can be loaded into Painter. Am I
doing something wrong or does Painter not support 16-bitt TIFF files??
Thanks for any help.

24-bit color refers to the total number of bits used to represent each pixel
on the screen. A pixel is composed of Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) components.
24/3 = 8 bits for each component. When talking about TIFF files in this
context the the 8 or the 16 referes to to how many bits are used for *each*
component. So an 8-bit TIFF is 24-bit color (8*3) and a 16-bit TIFF is 4
8-bit color (16*3).

So, just to be sure I understand. The answer is, no, Painter IX does not
support the opening of 16-bit TIFFs?

Right, because they are 48-bit color images. -- Russ
