The following instructions were written yesterday for a Painter 7 PC
user so a few things may not be pertinent for Mac users. Most of it will
be though, and I hope it helps, if not for your current need, at least
for the future.
Try replacing the Painter.set file (Painter settings including some user
settings like Palette Layouts, for instance) from:
Painter7CD1 > Content Files
Then, on your hard drive:
In the main Painter 7 folder, delete the Painter.ssd file (Scripts
file). A new, empty Scripts library will be regenerated when Painter 7
is opened again.
In the Painter 7 > Brushes folder, check the Pre-built Brush File size,
then delete the file. (This file is used to store brush information to
make brush building faster (Painter has to build the brushes. It's
regenerated when Painter 7 is opened again.)
If you still have problems:
1. Move any files you created into a new folder outside of the Painter 7
folders.
2. Uninstall Painter 7.
3. Manually delete any remaining Painter 7 folders and files.
4. Reboot.
5. Install Painter 7 and don't open it even one time.
6. Check the version number: Right click the Painter7.exe file, choose
Properties, click the Version tab and in the lower left panel highlight
Product Version. In the lower right panel, you should see 7.1.357 if the
Painter 7 Update was already part of your software when you bought it.
7. If the version number is not 7.1.357, install the Painter 7 Update.
8. Reboot.
9. Launch Painter 7.
In Edit > Preferences > General, lower the Auto Save Scripts for [ ]
days number if it's at the maximum, 10 days.
Keep your default Painter Brushes library in its original condition and
save custom variants in a custom brush category, then when Painter 7 is
closed, create a new brush library folder and move the custom brush
category into it.
Keep all of your brush libraries at a reasonable size. Otherwise, they
can slow down Painter 7 a lot.
Apply this rule to all libraries as well, Patterns, Papers, etc.
In Edit > Preferences > Undo, lower the Undo number if it's at the
maximum, 32.
After working for an hour or so, and each time you end a Painter
session, save your file and close Painter. Delete the Pre-built Brush
File unless it's under 1 MB.
Do regular system maintenance:
Clear out browser cache frequently, even several times a day.
Delete temp files regularly.
Run ScanDisk and Defrag at least once a week, or more often if your
system, or Painter 7, become sluggish or otherwise behave badly.
After doing all this, whenever Painter 7 begins to behave strangely,
save your file, close Painter 7, and reboot.
NOTE: Follow the Uninstall, reinstall, install Painter 7 Update steps
exactly to avoid problems.
Good luck, :o)
