They're OK. I've seen more interesting brushes. For instance, the set
that Chris ("Frodo") shared at In Depth Discussions. It's a beautiful
set of brushes and both Paulo and I agree that just loading those
brushes alone feels like a new Painter 7 upgrade.

In Depth Discussions is a site with a lot of software and other forums,
in message board format. It's a very nice interface, well organized,
uncluttered, and easy to use. One of the advantages is that we can post
images right there in our messages and, scrolling down the message
thread, we can see a series of images if, for instance, we're doing a
painting challenge, testing brushes, demonstrating techniques, etc. We
share brush files via the message threads and also in the Forum Freebies
forum.
A lot of artists at "IDD" use more than one program for different kinds
of images and sometimes to complete a single image (as is true
elsewhere). This results in many of us knowing each other and sharing
both information and our work even when we don't all use the same
software apps. The non-software-specific forums include General Chit
Chat, 2D Artwork, 3D Artwork, Work in Progress, Forum Freebies,
Community News and Help, Press Room, Texture Discussion, 3D Modeling,
Animation, The Challenge Forum, The Creative Process, The Software
Selector, Digital Photography and Photo Manipulation, Mixed Media
Artwork... to name most if not all of them.
Anyone can join, anyone can participate in as many of the forums as they
want to. In the Painter Forum, a challenge can be introduced by any
member whenever they feel like it. The challenges are open ended (no
time limit), and anyone can participate in them. The currently active
challenges are Kaleidoscope Challenge (the message thread is now 4 pages
long with 20 messages in each page, and we've had over 30 entries so
far. One of the members created a quilt of 1 inch square kaleidoscopes
contributed by all of us). Another challenge is the Finger Painting
Challenge, started because one of the members created what he named
Finger Paint brushes. A while back, we had great fun beginning with a
random shape and turning it into all kinds of great little images.. we
repeated that challenge with several shapes. Paulo introduced a Chinese
Painting challenge accompanied by three or four of his custom brushes
and a large image containing brush strokes we can use for brush stroke
practice. Several months back, I introduced a challenged named Magical
Carpet (or Tapestry from the Heart) that resulted in some lovely carpets
and tapestries done by member artists.
In addition to other brushes, we've spent a lot of time discussing the
Painter 7 Water Color brushes, shared custom brushes, and paintings or
demos of brush strokes. I don't know of another Painter group that's
focused on this as much, with the additional capability of seeing Water
Color images and demos, though some may have.
Best of all, it's a warm and friendly community of artists from beginner
to expert, hobbyist to professional. Paulo and I co-moderate the Painter
Forum with Cris Palomino. I think you said that you met her at Disney?
It's also a very active community and, other than the General Chit Chat
forum, the Painter Forum is the most active forum at IDD.
No, I wouldn't call it just another Painter list. <g> Had it been that,
I would not have accepted the request from Eric Rainey to co-moderate
the Painter Forum. It is, in my opinion, one of the best Painter-related
places to learn and enjoy Painter in a supportive and happy environment.
Being able to see images inside the messages is, obviously, a great
enhancement to learning and enjoying the atmosphere.
Any time you want to pay us a visit you'll be most welcome. I hope you
do! :o)
Download Chris's brushes and see for yourself. He has them nicely
organized and they're easy to download and set up. It's easier to do
that than for me to try to explain them. I will say that they are smooth
and fast, but that doesn't do them justice as they are extraordinary.
The message thread is named "Chris's Fine Art Brushes" posted by Frodo9F
(that's Chris).

Yep.. and I've explained IDD a few times, here and on the other
lists/newsgroups. The URL is always below my signature (almost always).
Chris is one of a rare breed. An artist first and foremost but one who has
the technical savvy to get what he wants from this irritating yet great
program.
Come on Corel, pay the man and incorporate his brushes in the next release!
He's doing your job for you.
