Hello everyone,

I recently had the experience of upgrading my computer's RAM and ran into
the dreaded "Out of Tiles" message. After an afternoon of experimenting I
was able to come up with something of a workaround, and I thought I'd post
my findings.

First, my original specs:
AMD Athlon, VIA chipset, 512 megs of RAM, Windows 2000 with SP2

With RAM prices so cheap now ($60 for 512mb at www.crucial.com ) I decided
to upgrade to 1gb. I installed it, and everything worked fine except
Painter, both versions 6.1 and 7, which crashed with the Tiles message.

Procreate support, of course, was non-existent, but I did find some old
support documents on the Corel site for Painter 6.1. Here's the link:

http://kb.corel.com/kbdocs/UNKNOWN/Painter55Mac/Painter55Mac_206451.htm

(The title says the information applies to Painter 5.5 on the Mac, but it's
wrong.)

On the Corel support page are instructions for modifying the BOOT.INI file
to restrict the amount of memory allocated to Windows. Basically, it
recommends reducing the memory below 512mb. I tried it, and it worked, but
what's the point? I was back to where I started before I installed the RAM.

I did some more searches on the Internet and found that people were
successfully running Painter 7 with more than 512mb, and I decided to do
some experimenting. When I restricted the amount of RAM to 768mb, to my
surprise everything worked fine. I bumped it up to 992mb, and it still
worked. At 1023mb it crashed.

Long story short (too late, I know) I have it set at 1000 and it seems to be
working just fine. From what I can conclude, the secret seems to be to
restrict the amount of RAM to something less than the total physical amount.
This number will probably vary, of course, depending on your configuration.
But the key is to restrict it.

So in the end, instead of 1024mb, my system has 1000mb and Painter's happy.
That's good enough for me.

I wonder if that has something to do with the VIA chip set ? I understand
that Painter 7 will run more memory than Painter 6. I tried my Abiet/Via
motherboard with 1gig and had the Out of Tiles error plus had a problem with
the Flash icon not being proper. These where the noticeable problems, I
removed the additional 256mg of ram down to 768mg to everything is ok.

Strange.

I am running Win2K with 1 GB of RAM and I don't have any problems with
regard to Painter "running out" of memory (or the "tiles" error).

very, very odd.

Maybe it has something to do with the amount of RAM that was in your system
when you ran the installer. When I ran the Painter 7 installer, I had the
1GB installed.

I don't know. Just my 2 cents.... :-\

Thanks for sharing this, Matt! I use Painter more than any other app and so
figured my system was just stuck with Painter's quirky 512MB RAM limit.
You've given me hope!!!

Hi,
I have painter 6 and have 512 mb ram and it won't work. It installs and
runs but won't let me paint anything on the canvas. It is a new computer and
I am heartbroken. I also have windows XP. Does anyone here know how to work
around that?

Since you've managed to launch the program, it's probably not a RAM issue.
Are you using a tablet? The 6.1 patch?

We'll need more details...

Stacey,

The computer on which your Painter software is installed has no effect
on Brush Tracking. If you didn't need to reset it before, you were just
lucky. It's recommended that each time you launch Painter, before doing
anything else, you reset the Brush Tracking. That way, you get off to a
good start. I have the Brush Tracking command in a Custom Palette, so I
can simply click that button to open the Brush Tracking dialog box.

I'm teaching an online class on the Painter Interface that includes
learning how to create Custom Palettes and Design Your Own Work Space
beginning:

Sunday November 25, 2001 through Saturday December 1, 2001. If you're
interested, you can read about it at:

http://www.pixelalley.com/Painter-Module1-Class1/painter-classes-links-page.html

Here are the instructions to Uninstall and reinstall Painter 6, then
install the 6.1 patch which you can download at:

ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Painter/6.1

Follow them exactly and you should be OK. Don't skip any of the steps.
If you don't want to bother creating a backup folder for the Painter 6
Default Files, you can skip those steps, but I recommend doing them
because the default files sometimes become corrupted and this will
prevent your having to get them from the CD.

To Uninstall Painter 6, reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch, and
create a backup copy of the Painter 6 default files:

1. Move any files you created to a folder outside of the main Painter
folders.

2. Uninstall Painter 6.

3. Manually delete any remaining Painter 6 installed folders and files.

4. Reboot.

5. Install Painter 6, then immediately install the Painter 6.1 patch.

6. Reboot.

7. Before launching Painter even one time, create a new folder outside
of the Painter 6 folders and name it something like "Painter 6 Default
Files Backup".

8. Go to the main Painter 6 folder and copy all of the default Painter 6
files.

9. Go to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder and paste the
copied default Painter 6 files into it.

Now you have a backup set of Painter 6 default files so when one of them
becomes corrupted, which happens on occasion, **with Painter closed** go
to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder, make a copy of the
appropriate file, then go to the main Painter 6 folder and paste the
copied file into it. This will save your having to Uninstall and
reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch again if a file becomes
corrupted... and save frustration, too!

Have fun! :o)
